I've used a cup for ten years now, but I use a whole bunch of stuff because I'm disorganised and sometimes when my flow is heavy and I know I'm going to be out during the day I just use tampons for convenience because emptying my cup in a public toilet makes me feel kinda sick. Having a tampon wick the moisture from my vagina always gave me the squicks so I've always used a liner for those days and just change it frequently. That's interesting about TSS.
I used to be at a forum for cloth diaper users, and there were a bunch of ultra "crunchy" mums who made their own cloth "mama pads" - they had some kind of fabric that would allow moisture to pass through, and then a bamboo core I think, to absorb the moisture. A lot of them also sewed their own diapers. They claimed that their flows were lighter because the disposable pads drew moisture from the vagina making the flow heavier overall. I don't believe that explanation but sometimes eating something like a vegan diet (which may correlate with cloth diapering) can make periods lighter. If undernourished, stop completely. I don't necessarily equate a heavy flow with poor health or eating habits, though. I always had a short and light period and I mean look at me
