Gerard Way (MCR) and Billy Corgan - The Black Parade
Call me crazy, but not only does Gerard look like Billy
he also admits that they map thier career around the pumpkins, here is an exact quote by Gerard of "My Chemical Romance" The interviewer asked about a comparison between MCR and SP and his response was... "Gerard: The funny thing is about The Pumpkins is, it’s one of me and Mickey’s favorite bands of all time!" - then the interviewer asked if he was on the mark about them being similar and Gerard said... "Gerard: You are on the mark. And it actually goes even further than that. There’s nothing contrived about this band but at the same time, a lot of things are planned in advance. We think about the future a great deal. In fact, when we made out first record, I had patterned our career off The Pumpkins because they were able to do such free and artistic music." So i was listening to "The Black Parade" Lyrics and it's weird, almost every line you could reference to the pumpkins and billy corgan, the whole thing that got me started on this was the fact that The Black Parade Video and Bullet with Butterfly Wings video was VERY similar in my eyes, i then find out the same guy produced both videos. When i was young i used to write poems and i'd steal parts of songs and try and make the poem my own (kinda funny now...but i did) so when i read these lyrics to this song...it reminds me of when i used to do that....check it out When I was, A young boy, - Disarm "i used ot be a little boy" My father, took me into the city To see a marching band He said, "Son when you grow up, will you be the saviour of the broken, the beaten and the damned?" He said, "Will you defeat them, your demons, and all the non-believers, the plans that they have made? Because one day, I'll leave you, a phantom, to lead you in the summer, to join the black parade." - Billy Corgan ALWAYS refered to the fact that the pumpkins were trying to change music and make people belieev in music that mattered..he wanted to save/savior music (that's just my personal thought on that line) When I was, A young boy My father, took me into the city To see a marching band He said, "Son when you grow up, will you be the saviour of the broken, the beaten and the damned?" Sometimes I get the feeling, she's watching over me And other times I feel like I should go And through it all, the rise and fall The bodies in the street And when you're gone we want you all to know We'll carry on, We'll carry on And though you're dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on We'll carry on - Spaceboy "before i'm dead and gone..........we won't belong" Until my heart I can't contain it The anthem won't explain it A world that sends you reeling from decimated dreams You're misery and hate will kill us all So paint it black and take it back Lets shout it loud and clear Defiant to the end we hear the call To carry on We'll carry on, And though your dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on We'll carry on And though your broken and defeated Your weary widow marches on And on we carry through the fears Oh oh oh The disappointed faces of your peers Oh oh oh Take a look at me 'cause I could not care at all Do or die You’ll never make me Because the world will never take my (heart) - not exact, but a VERY billy-esque thing to say Go and try; you’ll never break me We want it all, we want to play this (part) I won’t explain, or say I’m sorry I’m unashamed, I’m gonna show my (scar) Give a cheer, for all the broken Listen here, because it’s who we are I'm just a man; I'm not a hero - such a billy thing to say Just a boy, whose meant to sing this (song) - i've got to move it on i've got to sing my song I'm just a man; I'm not a hero I Don't Care We'll carry on We'll carry on And though you're dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on We'll carry on And though your broken and defeated Your weary widow marches on Do or die You’ll never make me Because the world will never take my (heart) Go and try; you’ll never break me We want it all, we want to play this (part) - as i play the part of a saint on my knees I won’t explain, or say I’m sorry I’m unashamed, I’m gonna show my (scar) - billy has a scar on his hand Give a cheer, for all the broken Listen here, because it’s who we are I'm just a man; I'm not a hero Just a boy, who had to sing this (song) I'm just a man; I'm not a hero) We'll carry on We'll carry on We'll carry on We'll carry on We'll carry on - end of space boy is...We won't belong We won't belong We won't belong We won't belong We won't belong in spaceboy - dead and gone and we won't belong are the 2 most sung lines in the black parade - dead and gone and we'll carry on are the 2 most sung lines as well, they both end with 5 straight "we'll carry on/we won't belong" I know some of you will say i am generalizing too much, and the fact billy has a scar and he says scar in the song...is lame and i would agree...but since there are SOOOOOO many pumpkin/corgan type references in ONE song, INCLUDING the video any small thing such as that...should be used as well There are lyrics in there that aren't taken right out of pumpkins songs, but if you've been a pumpkins fan for 10-15 years...you KNOW what billy is like, you've heard the songs and you can take a line that is completely unique from any pumpkins song and be like....that's such a pumpkins/corgan thing...you can TELL this song has pumpkins ALL OVER IT with that said, i love My Chemical Romance and i think this song is amazing and The Black Parade is a wicked wicked album, and on 1 final note....check this out. http://www.buzznet.com/tags/mychemic.../video/196970/ |

MCR is very much like the Pumpkins and even though i hear Welcome to the Black Parade 4-6 times a day at work, I never have gotten tired of it. It's cool because Gerard Way is basically the Billy Corgan of the 00's. If MCR had come out with this latest album back in 1995, and if SP never existed, all the SP fans here would have been diehard MCR fans, and they would have loved Gerard Way and would be talking about The Black Parade like they talk about MCIS. The music is just about the same. |

Wow, I've been thinking for a long time that MCR is trying to be like the pumpkins...and you've rejuvenated my interest.
Thread still sucks though. And you're very wrong in specifics. |

I like MCR, but they are far from being Pumpkins caliber material.

I just checked out that clip on youtube and I can definately something there. I kind of got a kick out of it because you can see the Pumpkins influence. The sudden and spontanious changes in the music and the lead singer kind of reminded me of Billy in some ways. I didn't really like the song (too punk for me) but I liked the clip. Very Pumpkins-esc.

I think its quite tenuous working the lyrics to the MCR to match up with the anything the pumpkins did, sure MCR seem to pretend to be the pumpkins but going so far as to try and pick out lines from their song is stretching it

this is crap. in SP you can hear the sabbath and the ledzep. MCR is just power chord punk.
even oasis songs have more interesting guitar work. |

the fact that someone took the time to match up MCR lyrics against any and all possible pumpkins connections is a bit disturbing to me, not to mention completely absurd. you could probably take pearl jam lyrics/references and do the exact same thing. get a life, man... that gerald bastard is in no way the *billy corgan* of this decade. clearly he would like to be. i've read interviews out of curiosity, and to me this band is just a pop-rock cliche. and the fact that people feed into it is sort of pathetic. personally, i think the bigger issue here is that since the 90's there has been no major breakthrough in a new *sound* for music. bands like my chemical romance, fallout boy, and whoever else are riding a tidal wave of commercial success by filling a void with gimmicks and shirtlessness. to that sir, i say "boooo." |

Gerard Way has commented in an interview (I'm too lazy to find it for you guys) he has listened to Siamese Dream more than any other album. He has also said that the person he was most nervous to meet was Billy Corgan because Billy was his idol growing up. Its no secret MCR are fans of SP and vice versa. (emphasis on vice versa)
