He obsessively edits vocal takes. Most musicians do that. If most people saw the level of minutiae that is debated and worked on ad nauseum in the studio by most major artists they would be shocked. I can understand doing this with a DAW, which is what virtually every pop star singer of the last twoish decades would be doing, but on tape? It seems like it would be an absolute nightmare, and far more difficult to get a proper result. Yeah, he's trying to be radio friendly, but applying modern recording methods to old recording technology is not going to achieve that.

I can recall Linda Strawberry or someone else in a video blog or something during these sessions mentioning that recording to tape is a "challenge" because you have to get your take right in one take, or else you rewind the tape and do it all over again.

with multitracking and flying faders it's not that difficult. You can draw automation in your DAW that follows the timecode printed on the tape. this is pretty common actually.
It's not something you actually need a specialist in. just someone willing to endure comping corgan solo vocals.
I don't put it past corgan to own two 24 track machines - one dedicated to what's currently being worked on (vox, drums, guitar walls) - and the other for bouncing stems.

On tape you can't re time-align your performances, so depending on the timing of the takes, comping syllables isn't any more complicated, just more work. if the timing of the syllable is off - that part just gets discarded, but that's essentially the guys job, checking for timing, pitch and intonation. comping vox takes is fun when you like the singer, and hell if you don't. I hope it payed well..

When this studio project started, Jimmy actually was playing drums with billy and they did some work together, but quickly had a falling out over writing credits (shocker...billy doesn't share those with anyone ever) and did not participate.

Billy's ego...his worst enemy.
