Default Shiny Lala and the Cotillions of Cyr

I figured if Billy hadn't tried to do four different albums (two of them double) over the last few years, and used a mix of material from all of those from an SP album, we'd have gotten a decent album.

So I decided to do that. This is what I came up with. A mix of rock (starting heavy) and then a good variety of guitar, synth, and acoustic tunes. Almost what you'd imagine a 90s SP album would be like, that kind of variety seen on Pisces or MCIS.

1. Solara
2. Marchin' On
3. Wyttch
4. Alienation
5. The Spaniards
6. Purple Blood
7. Silvery Sometimes
8. Anno Satana
9. Save Your Tears
10. Amarinthe
11. Travels
12. The Colour Of Love
13. With Sympathy
14. Archer

Note - it's pretty tricky going from a Shiny 1 track to anything else as they are so damn loud. But I think this is a pretty neat album. Ending on Archer would've been a cool move, like a little afterthought. I'd wanted to add Fragile The Spark too, but it would've leaned the album too heavily toward acoustic tracks.

I put this list on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6e...QlWSJuBKHg1qCg

I sort of agree with you, I added them to increase the "rock" element a bit. Both were singles so likely to be on an album. Plus, I kind of like Solara.

Wicked idea, some nice choices

Not gonna listen to alienation ever again, but the choice other nugs on your list has convinced me this is a worthwhile endeavor, and so u have inspired me to attempt my own list. Need to spend a little more time with CYR, first, probably, as my opinions on the songs seem to shift every time i listen

great idea, same for your post about the small club tour

i don't like the tracks you picked tho, just because the omission of malta, and the inclusion of more than...1 or 2 cyr songs

remember when we'd make "dream single disk album" based on ACTUAL albums that the guy put out...
now we're reduced to "make a dream single album" from the last 10 he's released.

shed a tear.

This is a horrible tracklisting. Bring it down to 6 - 7 and you have a good album.

I can't believe multiple people are listing Solara.. even two years later that song still sounds like trash

Have you heard the Cyr singles?

Solara is alright. It’s the best uptempo rocker of the 4 albums.

I think Cotillions works as an emo centrepiece towards the end of the album, but because of the mix doesn't gel as it could.

Revised:

1. Solara
2. Purple Blood
3. Silvery Sometimes
4. Travels

6. Amarinthe
7. Anno Satana

9. Fragile, The Spark

solara sucks. cyr is better. but the fact that there's no clear, good opener is a bad sign

My revised:

1. Cyr
2. Purple Blood
3. Silvery Sometimes
4. Travels
5. Aeronaut
6. Processional
7. Dulcet in E
8. Anno Satana
9. Save Your Tears
10. Amarinthine
11. With Sympathy
12. Fragile, The Spark
13. Cotillions
14. Wrath
15. Archer

honestly want to cut Cyr but I can't think of a better opener. Maybe just make it Purple Blood.

I know I'm the only one who likes Dulcet but whatever

It’s weird but i can’t stand the title track, lead single Cyr. It’s by far my least fave on the album. The groove and instrumental is ok but the up front big willie honk, ridiculous lyrics, and sterilized shrill backing vocal totally kills it. It’s like nail on chalkboard for me

I would try this if I bothered to keep the mp3s or subscribe to a service, though I thought people liked Processional?

absolutely inexcusable for that to be on any sort of "trimming the fat" compilation, no matter how few albums are involved

I mean.... Solara isn't great... but it'd be right at home in 2001 as a cousin to Cash Car Star.

Of the modern material, it's honestly one of the least offensive songs SP recorded,

Well it wasn't really an exercise what in "the best" or my favourite songs would be, more what the band might pick, and what to me sounds like "band" songs. Alienation is a band song, and there's aren't too many of them knocking around (I'm avoiding Seek and Knights cos they are shite).

There's a few things you have to think about when doing this exercise; not too many acoustic or synth songs, don't have two acoustic songs one after the other, etc. Think of it as you would do compiling an album, or a collection like Pisces. I mean, you don't have Soothe followed by Landslide for example.

I think it'd be laughed out of the Machina sessions as an absolutely tuneless pile of garbage, to be honest. From the opening chugs that nearly blow your ears off to the vocals that sound like they were pasted over the track and not mixed in any sort of way, the dropped consonants (the "i'm here to stay" delivery is right up there with the most grating he's ever done).

The live version they released after on YouTube was slightly better with James' leads but again, a song being ruined in the studio by baffling production choices isn't exactly a new post 2000 phenomenon.

Well, one good thing came out of this thread: I appreciate the Cotillions title track a lot.

One of maybe a handful of tracks that stands alongside SP1 material as is.
