whichever way I twist the fuzzy rules for initial run, Massive Attack, Portishead or Tricky don't fit in as "best run" for me
you'd have to count Blue Lines in 1991 and Mezzanine in 98 - too long Portishead had only 2 albums, Tricky well, as much as I love him, only one album I'd count now if you'd try to come up with a list of the 10 greatest albums of the 90ies - forget about genres - my list would have Massive Attack and Portishead on it (and sure as hell no Weezer, no Pavement, and not sure if Nirvana had a place in the top 10) |

actually - would you guys i.nclude Green Day if you'd only have 10 spots for best albums of the 90ies?
(doesn't matter what decade the artists started, simply albums made in that decade) and nirvana - I mean WOULD YOU REALLY |

off the top of my head, keeping it at 1 album per artist but including possible alternates for said artist
Mellon Collie & the Infinite Bolly on a Disney Train (alternates with SD, obv) Mezzanine (alternates w Blue Lines every 1ce in a bend moon) OK Computer (alternates w The Bends every 1ce in a blue moon) 13 (alternates with s/t & possibly Parklife) Angel Dust (alternates w King for a Day) Without You I'm Nothing (alternates with s/t) Psyence Fiction A Northern Soul (alternates with Urban Hymns) Songs of Faith & Devotion (alternates w Violator & Ultra) Another Night by the REAL MCCOY honorable mentions 2 loveless, heaven or las vegas, slim shady lp, future development, illmatic, vol 1: in my lifetime, different class & this is hardcore, definitely maybe & what's the story, automatic for the people & new adventures (oh hell i've liked monster & up enough to make them valid candidates for this at one point or another,) & uuuhh the two portishead albums. plus SUEDE. & a lot more; shit, there was a lot of good shit in the 90s |

but "established at this point" - erm. really, you mean the "lets make Nirvana the greatest fucking band ever AFTER the fact " bandwagon? yea no. if I'd go for favorite I'd have SP Adore on the list, and not SD, for example. but do as you please. |

enter the wu-tang woulda made my honorable mentions but it's always felt like more of a "go-to" rap album then one i was personally levelled by or whatever, despite liking it every time i hear it.

I do totally see the world as "Us Vs. T**** tbh and everything in my life has only confirmed that to me
Green Day is def part of the "T**** not one of us. But I mean I like them actually, just like I have plenty of friends that aren't um "alternative type people" as I said (it's a simplification though) |

well honestly - I don't recall being anything but reserved towards "the other camp" - the top 40 dance and pop charts "jocks and cheerleaders" types in moddle and high school and would sign the "they have been nothing but awful to me and in general" statement.
people are just shits under 20. |

The thing is, it doesn't end in high school.
The Top 40 chart people are the majority of the people you have to deal with FOR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE |

it changes a lot, though. the top 40 charts people get older, too.
I mostly get along with them now, it's not a big deal that our musical tastes - or anything else - don't go along. one of my favorite people ever - both to work with and in private - is a metalhead with a soft spot for Katy Perry. I love him. doesn't matter that he turns pale when he has to listen to my music - it's not personal any more. people are a lot more than what they listen to, there aren't camps you have to identify with or stay out. unlike school and to some extent - college. |

I just think shit like that contributes to a bunch of gratuitous cultural divides - that sort of thimble-deep tribalism inherent in stuff like music subcultures - to a situation where society already has enough real divides of actual consequence.
I also think that when it comes to stuff like "alternative" or "difficult/outsider/alternative/deeper" art/music/literature etc, that a general air of assumed smugness/condescension/superiority from those corners actually contributes to anti-intellectual and concurrent anti-progressivist sentiment amongst lower-income and under-educated sectors of society, which in turn fuels conservative and libertarian groundswells. |
