Prince appreciation thread
There's very few artists I've listened to from a very early age that I still like, two in fact: Prince and Pixies. Something about that P. My older brother taped Sign of the Times for me when I was 8 and I've been a Prince fan ever since.
I actually cried when he died; what kind of world do we live in? I never saw him live, even though he came to smaller local venues in Amsterdam when I already lived here. he'd announce it the same day but It was a hundred euros which I thought was a bit much. He didn't tell me he'd die not too long after though. What's your favorite album? |

Excluding Purple Rain for its perfection, definitely Dirty Mind

Dirty Mind > Controversy > 1999 = his peak
There are a few killer tracks on the s/t album before Dirty Mind, and obviously Purple Rain is good, but the "sound" of these 3 albums is the business. Everything afterwards is too diluted, even if they all had some good songs ("Kiss" for instance fucking destroys) |

My man. <3
She beat me over the head with the remote control opened a hole, and my whole brain fell out of my skull I picked it up and screamed, "Look bitch, what have you done?!?" "Oh my God, I'm sorry son" "Shut up you cunt!" I said, "Fuck it!" Took it and stuck it back up in my head then I sewed it shut and put a couple of screws in my neck |

One of the first CDs my mom bought was Diamonds & Pearls and then when she heard Heresy by NIN she said it sounded like Prince.

No she's been married to a guy that looks like Dan Harmon for over 20 years.

Batman '89 soundtrack. I am conscious it's nowhere near his best work, but it was one of the first cassette tapes I ever owned, and I remain partial to it. It started a long love affair with his 80's work.
One of these days I need to try to give his 90's output more of a chance. |

Used to see him attending shows at the Dakota Jazz Club downtown. Watching him walk in with his bodyguards always put a big smile on my face.
Unfortunately never made the trip to Paisley Park in Chanhassen but friends have neat stories of eating pancakes while watching him get out there at 4 a.m. |

I love this one...
Dosh April 21, 2016 · when is Jeremy Y. gonna weigh in with his Prince story? (and perhaps my favorite Prince story..) Jeremy Y. There we were, doing our monthly "fresh squeez" freestyle jazz/ hip hop/ noise whatnot (side note- where I met Martin with his excellent posture, ponytail, and random pieces of metal to drum on) I happened to be playing a Rhodes into a delay pedal for this particular jam, and I even remember the riff I was playing- a Bernie Worrrell inspired descending pentatonic thing. Funky. This huge man in an expensive suit comes up to me and says, (not asks) "My boss would like to sit in with the group." And I'm thinking, some rich guy who always wanted to be in a band wanted to get involved, and of course! Awesome, tell your boss he can try out music! It's super fun! This perfect looking human in all black with jewels where elf shaped ears would be walks up to me and asks, "What key?" "Uhhhhhhhh.... D." He starts in on the riff I was just playing, dubbing himself out, spinning around, dancing, playing these gorgeous chromatic sheets of notes. His entire life went into it. And he was laughing. Everyone was laughing. And then he left. He didn't have to come. He didn't have to stay. He didn't have to play. He could have played anything on any instrument. He played my riff. My Prince story. |

Graffiti Bridge is my fave Prince album.Does anyone else love Graffiti Bridge?
It's not an album that gets mentioned an awful lot, but so many great songs: the title track, New Power Generation, Joy In Repetition, Round And Round, Elephants And Flowers, Thieves In The Temple, Can't Stop This Feeling I Got. Prince was more talented than Micheal Jackson. I don't understand why he wasn't regarded as the King Of Pop instead. Plus, he was much more talented than Billy Corgan, but maybe that goes without saying... |

Kind of funny in retrospect, having the Batman soundtrack (essentially a kids movie) be a Prince album.

Prince is definitely up there as an artist i respect & admire more than actually liking and actively listening to the content of - but i haven't even come close to hearing all his music so who knows, maybe there's an album in there that would completely reverse the above opinion

well Michael Jackson called himself the king of pop if I'm not mistaken. Prince was probably a fucking weirdo but nowhere near MJ when it comes to mental health |

Have you heard Planet Earth? I think it's a great album too. Chelsea Rodgers, Guitar, Mr. Goodnight, Future Baby Mama...great songs. Very underrated album-not surprising since he virtually gave it away for free here in the U.K like 20ten, which is another good album, featuring a song called Lavaux which I really like.
I think my fave Prince song is When Doves Cry, closely followed by Raspberry Beret, Lady Cab Driver, Joy IN Repitition, 17 Days and Manic Monday. Raspberry Beret was the first song I played on guitar; I discovered it by accident; quite a simple song. |

I always kinda feel like I should give/have given Prince more time. I really like the hits of his i'm familiar with (y'know, all of em) and I really really dig his attitude towards sexuality and gender and his politics on the music industry and artist exploitation and also I just really like the way the dude played guitar; 98% of "Virtuoso"/"Classic" guitarists I find to be boring shit but the man could wail and made every note feel essential.

Not really but that's unrelated to Prince being alive or dead, I just have brutal depression.
