Default Need Help On LCD/Plasma TV's Please

I'm looking to get something in the 42" range. I need a lot of information because I don't want to make a bad decision. I have no idea what sites to go to in order to look for information or where to start.

Also I own a 360, so I would like something that work best with my console. From what I know, I'm leaning towards getting a plasma because IMO the picture is sharper and crisper. I know, I know the burn image is an issue for some people but I find with LCD's they tend to look gassy, or wavy.

Anyway if you have any tips, information or websites that might help me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

LCD is sharper and crisper (good for gaming), and better in bright rooms

Plasma has better perceived picture quality overall because they produce better colors

not sure about that. i have a 40" samsung lcd and it has noticeable ghosting the whenever the screen suddenly turns completely black. LCDs are known to not be able to produce blacks as good as plasma.

Interesting. I was looking at the 42" samsung plasma. My gf has the 42" sammy lcd aquos and I don't care for it, but the HD cables aren't hooked up either. That has a big difference too.

I have a 50" panny plasma. I initially walked into Costco because I read they had a great deal on a 40". Turns out the 50" was about 100 more. Great deal I think for about 1800 after taxes. Tho I wouldnt use it for video games for fear of burn in. Sure the background moves but the characters remain more or less in the same spot for long periods of time

I have a 37" Samsung LCD and while it is very sharp, faster movement tends to blur. Fast movement on plasma is much more fluid.

LCD's certainly are not bad, but I am baffled at the amount of people who instantly tell future buyers to go LCD if they play games. Plasma will look awesome for games too, and the movement will be less blurry. They ARE generally more expensive though, and I'm still very impressed with my LCD.

Also, if you are a gamer, go 1080p if you want 1:1 pixel ratio. 720p TV's are all now apparently 1366x768 instead of 1280x720. What this means is the pixels will stretch to fit the slightly higher resolution, degrading image quality unless you sit a good 6-8+ feet away from the TV. I learned this the hard way. You really shouldn't sit any closer to an LCD anyway, but not everyone has a huge room to place it in.

good info. I played Twisted Metal Black tons when I first got mind. While im not really into gaming it was pretty bitching for sure. I do know that the burn in time is getting better and better for plasma. But seriously, who cares, I (and I imagine the average person as well) will get a new one in 3 to five years anyway.

All I can try to add is that cnet is your best friend, and Sharp Aquos are the best tv's on the market, period. Best of luck

for higher end ones i have heard the same thing but dont really have any personal experience to back that up.. but the cheep ones (grand or less) it still very much exists. me and my roommates bought a 42" no-name special at best buy for $1000 and within 6 months it had clearly visible image burn in.. and it is not even used that much. Its esp bad when watching anything in 16x9.. you can clearly see the outline of where the 4x3 ratio fits on the screen

alright the 11/20/07 pc magazine has a shoppers guide to hdtv

there were 2 editors choices
one was the pioneer pro 940 hd which is basically an entertainment center 42" for 3.3k
the other choice was a vizio vp42 hdtv (1080i) for 1100, its a 42" plasma. 2 hdmi in, 2 component ins.

thats what im probably picking up shortly.

the burn in issue is addressed in the article
"early plasmas were especially susceptible to the uneven wearing of the posphors used to gereate the light that creates the picture. the sad result is that these affected panels exhibited permanent image retention otherwise knows as the dreaded plasma burn in. by contrast, todays plasma televions use far hardier posphor formulas that better resist aging. these sets also incorporate a variety of electronic protection schemes that all but ensure that burn in is a thing of the past.

also says plasmas leaking gas is a myth, do not require recharging, or maintenance, and that a new plasma "could conceivably operate continously for more than 11 years before it reached the end of its life"

edit: maybe i wont get that vizio the review on cnet is not exactly inspriing

http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...tag=prod.txt.1

will probably end up trying to pick up a steal somewhere on dec 26

edit: im intrigued by this samsung FP-T5084 50"

Yeah, they're anal retentive as all hell. Every single tv or brand has its own nitpicks, samsungs for their "banning", sharps for their "clouding", etc. They will find problems with every single tv. But they give extremely useful information. At least for me when I was researching my own tv.

I'm probably wrong, but maybe that has more to do with the refresh rate of the tv than being a symptom of LCD? I don't notice a blur. But then again I've never played my 360 on a plasma for comparison.

Debaser, thanks for the links to that forum. I found a lot of useful links to the tv I'm looking on getting and the CNET buying guy is very useful.

I'm looking at getting the Sammy 42" Plasma 4254.
