Billy is now a rat in a cage minus the rage. It’s to be expected at his age and where he is in life. As his solo album proved, he’s moved on.

Teenage angst has paid off well, now I’m quoting In Utero.

No! And I wouldn’t want them to (laughs)! The way we used to live and work was exhausting. Ultimately it was very unhealthy and unsustainable. With Solara I had Jeff record the guitars, I recorded the vocals, Jimmy came in and did the drums in one take. It took half a day, in the old days it would’ve taken weeks. We’re all professionals, we don’t need to spend weeks jamming and developing songs. We can come back to them. We have what Jimmy calls a “RERO model”. That’s release early, release often.

That’s a software development methodology right?

Right. Jimmy works with internet startups and we’re adopting some of what works there. The idea is MaaS, remember that because in a few years everyone will be saying it and I invented it. It’s music as a service, not music delivery but the actual music. We released [Solara] as soon as we possibly could and we’re really monitoring the KPIs and learning from them. In any other industry if the users don’t like something then that’s a problem, it’s a bug and you release a fix. So if people are saying something’s mastered too hot or needs a guitar solo or whatever we can release a 1.1 and 1.2 and so forth. It’s common sense really, I had a real lightbulb moment with this, but we’re the absolute first in this sector to do it.

So there’ll be a Solara 1.1?

Definitely. We’re still working on a way to get all of the feedback from everywhere converted into actionable data but yes there’ll probably be a few versions before we get it right. From what I’ve read people would like some tweaks to the mix and a denser arrangement. I kept version 1 very simple so that we could build on it based on user feedback, so it’s going to be really interesting to see where that takes the song. Ultimately with Solara we’re trying to learn what people want from a Smashing Pumpkins song in 2018. Once we’ve done a few iterations and the fans are happy we’re going to look at releasing the EPs.

If they are serious about this they would use that mailing list they have and email each fan. They just need to insert a short survey like the following and they could collate the data easily. If they are serious about it. But I doubt that somehow.

It's real, and they are using this for the Machina reissue as Billy doesn't like the original mixing. He is planing to re-record a few tracks as well.

If that interview isn't real, someone should stand up and take a bow because they've really nailed Billy's speech.

The survey was just an example of what they could do. Still 40 people completed it so may as well share the results (we all know Billy is here in some guise or other so he'll probably see it).

Smashing Pumpkins May Re-Record for Expanded ‘Machina’ Reissue

As previously reported, the Smashing Pumpkins are prepping an extensive, six-disc reissue of their 1998 album Adore. Also as previously reported, here’s Billy Corgan actually smiling while cradling cats on the cover of the PAWS Chicago magazine. Well, now the man and his band have announced plans to lovingly revisit their 2000 LP, Machina/The Machines of God. Most surprisingly, the Pumpkins are interested in commissioning remixes and having current artists re-sing parts.

Corgan has spoken before on his plans to, as the band’s site puts it, “present MACHINA in the original form in which it was written … as a theatrical narrative” meant to play as a double or triple album. Whether or not original co-producer Flood is on board remains unclear, but “work has begun” on creating new transfers from the original 24-track tapes, plus live recordings from the era.

Expect “acoustic alternates, re-contextualized soundtrack pieces, and use of spoken word to create an immersive experience.” That bit comes from “The Panopticon,” but Corgan is quoted directly as well: “I’m also not opposed to asking current artists to participate, singing songs as such on the compositions meant for other character’s voices. Finishing what the band started so long ago, and we just didn’t have the strength to end.”

This song is hilariously boring. I can completely understand his idiotic reasoning for rejecting it years ago and then thinking it would be a good idea to release now.

Guy has been striking out at bat for over 15 years because he tries to understand the psychology of baseball instead of just being a good player.

What do you guys think it would take for Jeff to quit the band?

The second week after it's release "Solara" still hasn't entered at least the Top Alternative Songs Chart on Billboard (40 listed songs):

How is the chart calculated - is it sales? Airplay. The link to buy it on sp.com doesn't even take you to a link to buy it, just free streaming ... No physical release ... ?

Last FM stats put it as 2nd most listened to SP song in last 7 days - but hasn't changed the overall weekly total listeners much... If at all.
