The universe might just be one "vast and complex hologram". And our vision of life as being in 3D may just be an illusion.
That's according to astrophysicists who have studied the cosmic microwave background, or the afterglow that is left over from the Big Bang. After doing so, they have found substantial evidence that our universe is holographic, they said. The idea that our universe is a hologram was first proposed in the 90s. It suggests that all of the information – what we think is our 3D reality, and time – is actually just contained on a flat surface on its boundaries. "Imagine that everything you see, feel and hear in three dimensions (and your perception of time) in fact emanates from a flat two-dimensional field," said Kostas Skenderis, a professor of mathematical sciences at the University of Southampton. "The idea is similar to that of ordinary holograms where a three-dimensional image is encoded in a two-dimensional surface, such as in the hologram on a credit card. "However, this time, the entire universe is encoded." The research could unify two of the most central parts of our understanding of physics – general relativity, which explains it at the biggest scale, and quantum theory, which explains it at its very smallest. "Holography is a huge leap forward in the way we think about the structure and creation of the universe," said Professor Skenderis. "Einstein's theory of general relativity explains almost everything large scale in the universe very well, but starts to unravel when examining its origins and mechanisms at quantum level. "Scientists have been working for decades to combine Einstein's theory of gravity and quantum theory. Some believe the concept of a holographic universe has the potential to reconcile the two. I hope our research takes us another step towards this." |

Fail to see how that has any impact on our daily lives.
But it's an interesting read nonetheless. |

It's hard to say how I feel about it, because I just don't have the background to really grasp it, and the article makes little effort to break it down (says new evidence gives equal support to the holographic-universe theory and the mainstream expansion theory, but doesn't explain the nature of that evidence), but if my understanding is correct, the "holographic-universe" idea is indeed really cool, but not for the pseudo-solipsist reasons the article is stating.
It seems that what this theory claims is that descriptions of the observable universe (volume enclosed by cosmological horizon), or perhaps large expanses of space in general, share something in common with descriptions about black holes. One solution to the black-hole information paradox leads to the conclusion that all relevant information about a black hole is encoded in its surface (the event horizon). Its surface area is proportional to its entropy. This essentially means that everything one could possibly know about a black hole is recorded just on its surface, no need to look inside for additional information (Which is great! We can't look inside.). It seems to me that the holographic-universe theory says that the same is true for the observable universe. Small bits of space tend to have so little energy that all three spatial dimensions are relevant to describing them (unless they have enough energy for that radius of space to be the mass' Swarzchild radius, in which case, you've got a black hole on your hands, and can describe it with a 2D surface), but large amounts of space will tend to have a lot of energy, so when the scale of a region of space gets big enough, you can describe all existing information about it in two dimensions again. This is more about how we can model the universe in our equations, than anything. Doesn't really mean that 3D space is an "illusion." From an analytical standpoint, I don't even think that is coherent. Space is just "not that sort of thing" that can be an illusion. It just means that, when describing the universe in certain contexts (high energy or large scales), you can treat what you're working with like it's 2D in the equations, and the math works out and yields the same results as the currently accepted theory. |

Can somebody get Libertine/_________ to post here? I feel like he'd know this stuff inside-out and explain what I'm misunderstanding.
I sometimes saw him in Facebook comments sections because it turns out we liked some of the same meme pages, but I felt too weird about messaging him. |

When people describe what Luke de Spa was like, he sounds a lot like Libertine.

This is cool and all, but a lot of what we see is based on probability and illusion, like when our brain "sees" an object that is blocked partially by another object. That 3D space itself is like that is not too unbelievable, imo. But I have issues with reality anyway

Yeah, anarchist. Don't even need to say "lefto-anarchist," because anarchism is inherently leftist. There are things called "post-left" anarchism, like "anarcho-capitalism," but there is debate about whether those even count as anarchism (I don't think they do, but it's not an important debate to me, because substance matters more than semantics). Anarchism without any prefixes is kinda just assumed to be left unless otherwise stated.
Dude was probably the smartest guy I've ever met on the internet. He just seemed really contemplative and curious and thought about everything deeply, and his opinions and arguments reflected that. He was, like, some sorta polymath, knew shit about physics, history, politics... I think his major was computer science, but he actually wanted to be a filmmaker. I think he'd get along with everybody here, especially these days. Maybe somebody should let him know about the Kindness Regime. There have been some cracks in it lately, but I think we'll weather them. |

a few years ago I read about (and I know I am not explaining this correctly) scientists who were triangulating distances in deep space and they continuously found their calculations only made perfect sense if a 2-dimensional universe was assumed

when you really give it the slightest bit of thought and not just operate on autopilot, there are so many different reasons why nothing matters. theories like this, or contemplating our millisecond blip of an existence in what is the infinity of time and space, or thinking how in millions of years the universe will be cold and lifeless, etc
it's all very liberating |
