neither is any other artist that has been posted in this thread. "contemporary country" has almost nothing to do with country music. Half of it sounds like Taylor Swift and the other half sounds like post-grunge except the lyrics are about tractors and beer

when he released his first major album (after 3 excellent self-released cdrs) he re-recorded most of the old songs and they sounded horrible compared to the originals while the new material had too much of a gimmicky road song vibe so i kind of fell out.

well the pedal steel might not be a traditional country instrument but neither is the violin. as soon as you start introducing banjos and fiddles and whatnot it becomes bluegrass

i meant the songwriting in general wasn't country and was more southern rock or roots rock influenced.

you can get real crazy with the purist notions of country/appalachian/bluegrass/american folk music. they didn't even allow drummers to perform at the grand ole opry for a long time.
