"At one point, we enjoyed the Smashing Pumpkins material because of Corgan. Now, we have to do so in spite of him."

Are you suggesting he hasn't destroyed his legacy?

that was a pretty brilliant summation, "when they exceeded their grasp they always did so with passion and dignity"

i wouldn't say dignity per se but passion oh surely

Yes, I am suggesting that. The SP legacy is Gish through Adore... it will stand for all time. Tommy and Who's Next is still in our culture and held up as amazing works, it doesn't mean that Face Dances or Psychoderelict or Ironman destroyed The Who's Legacy. Whatever Billy decides to do shouldn't have any impact on the greatness of 91 to 2000.

I feel you here with this analogy, but it's difficult to say how polarized the fans were when these albums were actually happening, not with 20 yeras of hindsight.

The problem is that if it were simply about a legacy at this point nobody would be here. Personally I still hang around because I think he can top his "best" work. I think there have been glimpses here and there that show a whole lot of promise and if he could just find the right model it would be really amazing. Problem is BC has no idea who he is or who his fans are.

np: zeitgeist album (still like it a lot)

no way i don't think any thing he has done post-2007 has transcended his pre-2000 output. that's what i'm looking for - something that doesn't remind me that i'm listeneing to the smashing pumpkins. i just want real and honest music.

personally i think this can only be done at this venture with an acoustic guitar and the piano - not that i automatically judge anything that's not this. those two instruments just are very pure. so sick of "the rock band".

great way to put it

i think his unfortunate obsession with needing to be Really Big and Really Famous also hamstrings anything he tries to do. because when he did good shit he was hongree for that status, and he achieved it and kept it for what like a couple years. he then went in a radical shift and but he didn't really expect to lose as much as he did and by the time he was ready for machina the popular focus had shifted and he's been angry about it ever since...and trying to recapture it...but he's not hungry anymore, he keeps making stuff he thinks will appeal to the broad market and he doesn't understand that broad market barely exists. you have to Get Lucky ( see what i did there?) to hit the mainstream these days.

KreatorKind or whatever is kind of correct though in that SP's LEGACY isn't really destroyed. Even right now, most people who know who this band is have never heard their new music, or Zwan, or read anything insane or low-class or absurd that b0lly has written on the internet, or followed his public childish vendettas against his former bandmates. I would say that Corgan's credibility has been destroyed to a lot of his long-time fans, which is how I feel, but the legacy of the Smashing Pumpkins 1988-2000 can't really be touched. I don't like MCIS any less because of how terrible the post-2000 output has been.

their legacy is either "oh god i hate that guy's voice" or "man they used to be so great, how come they suck so much now?"/"I haven't listened to them since the 90s"

part of what legacy means is the popular/pervasive opinion of the band as time goes on, it's not considering the isolated appreciation of several albums that were released. Every time anyone talks about SP they have to add qualifiers like "Granted Bill Corgan is a douchebag" or "I know their albums these days are shit but" that's a legacy. Not how good MCIS is, or how it stands tall today.

like when Dubya always talked about how he wasn't appreciated as president now but as time goes on his LEGACY will be appreciated which is still LAUGHABLE MAN, HA HA!

uh but we basically are his music critics. as people who have listened to his albums hundreds if not thousands of times, we are probably more intimately familiar with his music than any hack writing reviews for a magazine. I think he was one of the most talented musicians of his generation and you're right that the goodness he gave us will never go anywhere. Having said that, there has been a steep decline in the quality and vision of his art over the years. He isn't alone in this, it happens to lots of musicians, it's just especially terrible to us because we love the old music so much.

guys kreatorkind is one of those AOR rock trogs that doesn't "get" music but thinks he's a profound appreciator of it because he believes in brand loyalty

basically think of him as a less trolly/fake version of morespsoon

um yes, a legacy which points to the fact that most people who know who this band is or was have never heard the new music and know nothing about billy's insanity

um so again, by your logic, a band that is no longer popular has a legacy of "has-beens?" Is that correct? If it's not maybe you could explain why has-beens applies to SP but not the dozens of other rock acts who are only remembered for their good output even though they become terrible and fell into obscurity?
