Default Aeronaut is about the end of the Pumpkins

Quote:
I went down the middle, the world survives
I ended the band to try to compromise, but life still goes on without it

Quote:
One little mind to ease off one silver drum that beats
It's just me left, trying to replace an amazing drummer

Quote:
This mountain was torn from us
Our success and reputation (which we built over the years [see second chorus, 'This mountain was born from us']) was destroyed

Quote:
If I'm leaving you without return a snare
Can a boy float through time and space
You can call it home if you wish or if it's fair
If I'm exploring genres and doing weird shit, you can like it if you want

The 'snare' thing, I imagine must be a pun about a snare drum and a snag. 'If I'm leaving rock music without returning' and 'I'm leaving you guys, but I fucked up'

Quote:
Lovers won't you mourn with me
Fans, won't you accept the band is over

if this is true though it's incredibly sad he's had to make this type of song more than once, and over 15 years apart at that

i don't mean sad in a condescending way, i mean it actually makes my heart sink

I think the lyrics of the song describe more of Billy's decisions besides just ending the Pumpkins... it's about his decision to be who he wants to be.

I'm always fascinated at how hard some people try to find meaning in Billy's lyrics.

You do realize his lyrics are gibberish right? Any meaning you might find in any of his songs strictly comes from you imposing your own interpretation into the lyrics, and not from any lyrical craftsmanship from Billy.

the wording of "i'm leaving you without return a snare" makes it sound like he's talking about some snare-drum insurance policy

Yeah it's pretty presumptuous for Billy to lyrically presume that all fans former/current would hump him and thus be "a lover." I mean, a friendly HJ perhaps- dude did write Siamese Dream after all. But geez, that doesn't mean he can refer to me as a lover.

Further, Billy might be saying 'morn. Maybe he's making an invitation to wake up a bit early, perhaps for breakfast. And, maybe, I'm taking the word lovers the wrong way. Maybe he's just saying any lovers in general- like anyone who's currently screwing someone on the regular. Maybe by saying "Lovers won't you 'morn with me..." he's just saying "if you're banging someone, wake up early and join me at IHOP." I mean, I don't know. Lyric interpretation can be sort of subjective.

Hmmmmm I dunno i think if there's honesty in this lyric, it's that there's something amiss in our cosmos. Yet still, we must love.

It was way more than once. He was predicting the end by the Adore-era:

Soot and Stars:

the words flow
decisions made
idea's mine
but the inspiration not
dreams of hangers-on
dreams of getting well
spells of esmeralda
amarose fortold

(...)

like a dog that's down
in a corner just aside
waiting to be called
waiting to be yours
ghosts of a machine
without purpose or will

i'll often speak of you
but the you was always me
'cause when i speak of me
it's me i ask of you
so let there be no truth
just trickery in rhymes
time the only thing
waiting still is death

IMO James and D'Arcy are the 'hangers-on' he mentions. The whole song was about remembering when he enjoyed doing what he was doing, and recognizing that the band was essentially done, or coming to an end.

Blissed and Gone, too:

i had no voice
i had no drive
i had no choice
i've done my time
i had myself
had my band
i had my love
had no hand in watching it all fall apart

Only genuinely moving lyrics he wrote that were directly about this topic, IMO.

Are you crazy? Look at the album cover. It's just a beautiful song for his kid and his girlfriend. "I went down the middle, the world survives": its a literary reference to the beginning of The Divine Comedy, from Dante. It's a very personal song, about his private, real life. It's a song about love, personified in his son. The mountain is his son. It has nothing to do with bands or his career.

You're putting more thought into these lyrics than Billy did writing them. They're nonsense. That line he said during Storytellers about "1979" being a good title because it had plenty of options in a rhyme scheme, though he laughed it off, was not a joke.

Anybody reading that deeply into lyrics, given what we've learnt about Corgan over the last 10 years, is deeply misguided - but even with talented lyricists, reading that deeply into lyrics when you're an adult is pretty embarrassing.

Didn't he also say in an interview that Mayonaise was written with total bullshit throwaway lines but it ended up being an accurate representation of how he felt at the time?

All that can be inferred by that is that Billy felt like total bullshit at the time.

Even the title of that song is total bullshit (like a lot of Billy's songs).
