great songwriters
who've you been gravitating towards when it comes to great songwriting? I've been really heavily into Neil Finn recently. That guy really brings it when it comes to writing a perfect melody. I've been a fan of his for a long time (nearly 20 years come to think of it), but just recently i started listening to the new crowded house album that came out the same time as zeitgeist, and on an emotional/songwriting level, it really blows z out of the water. (and yes, on a production level as well)
And I can thank redbull for making a post a few months ago that got me to check out Jens Lekman, another artist who's really grabbed my interest. Third on my list would be Richard Swift. I'd like to hear some of your suggestions; I've been trying to do some songwriting myself lately and it helps to be inspired by others who are really good at it. |

Jason Collette, I also enjoy Kate Nashs album. Also The last few Pajo albums have been really good.

seriously though, i guess the reason i compare stuff to that album is because i'm not ready to admit my disappointment. After all these years and all of this devotion, I felt like I was really going to fall in love with it, and I can't seem to shake the disillusionment that comes with discovering just how many other new albums i like much MUCH better. I'm just now coming out of denial, and it's a bummer.

a: i don't want to talk about smashing pumpkins anymore here, otherwise I'd be on the sp board right now.
b: you can't prove your opinion, would you please leave my thread? |

You invited the SP remarks by comparing the album to Zeitgeist, then said you'd continue to do so. You can't be surprised by the reaction.
And lord knows you talk about plenty of other shit on the SP board already so what's another one on another board? |

i was just fucking around when i said i'd continue to do so. I'm trying to shut up about them here to make you damn mods happy, so why are you still bitching?
I'm genuinely interested in hearing about some good songwriters that I may not have heard, and we all get enough bitching about the general suckage of sp on the sp board. I'm pretty sure the reason everyone strays off topic over there so much is because so many people act like dicks on the gen chat board, so they (we) do the general chat there. You guys clearly like it being segregated in that way so that we stay out of your hair, so why don't you cut us some slack when we do? |

i'd find it easier if it was just about lyrics. lyrics and melodies? well that's just too vague.

yes but if this thread is about great lyricists and melody-writers, then we're talking about all tonal and (at least partially) vocal music, which is the majority of all music produced by western culture today, i'm sure.
we might as well talk about breathing. |
