I always heard "When you wake up your own way, throwin' your own love away"
I'm not disagreeing with you... I'm just showing off my bad lyric-understanding skills. |

sooo... it's tristessa day.
tristessa is the song that made me realize that the skill of the drummer has absolute control over the skill of a band. if a drummer has no boundries and can play up to any music, the music can only go up and up. and i always hear 'when you wake up your away' it would keep up the rhyming of 'away' with 'away' Last edited by SlingeroGuitaro : 12-01-2007 at 10:30 AM. |

I've always loved this song...it's one of the first songs I heard where I began to really appreciate the musicianship of music, rather than just liking the lyrics or listening to something catchy. I was so young back then, and my musical taste matured so much when I started listening to the Pumpkins! The drums and guitar in this song really caught my attention. I love the solo about 2 mins in. And I just love the way Billy sings "What you believe! You'll wish to receive!" Just gets me every time.

Tristessa has another one of my favorite solos. It's just so fun... the first couple seconds just make me smile The whole song is great! But it's never been a favorite of mine.

i wonder, had billy not had the good fortune of finding jimmy, would he have ever made it out of the chicago local scene? Though he had the determination, skill, and talent that he needed to make it, I think his chemistry with Jimmy, and Jimmy's incredible abilities are what really pushed it over the edge and allowed billy the opportunity to follow his musical vision to the fullest. With just any old guy keeping time, who might have (probably would have) lacked the skill and ability to convey such emotion, we may not have ever heard of bc.
of all the rockers on gish, Tristessa is tied with Siva for my favorite. It completely pummels the listener into submission. |

Tristessa. You think that drum intro is played with a double bass pedal? I've always wondered 'cause Jimmy used to use one but hasn't for ages and they've so rarely play it since Gish days. Then again, Chamberlin is a fucking monster so who can say...
Along with I Am One I think its always tied for my favourite song on Gish. Its got "Bill's signature dropped D press down the string above the nut quasi-dive bomb then come back up or maybe he's just de-tuning it at the peg then tuning it back up which would be cheating bit that I've never worked out how to do but he does it live from time to time" part. Jimmy always talks about how his meter on this album was a little all over the place. I've never really picked it but are there some songs that are notorious for their "organic timing"? Gish as a whole just has a great feel, rhythm wise. |

Upon further inspection, I reckon its all single bass drum pedal 'cause he's working the 8ths on the hats too. The why did his Gish set up have a double bass pedal?!?
Quit messing with my mind Chamberlin! |
