Exclamation Iconic, timeless guitar maker Gibson on the verge of bankruptcy

this can't help but sting, because i truly love gibsons and i wish i could own a few really badass les paul and sg customs from the 60's and 80's, but -

boy, do they have it coming to them.

they have been making inexcusably terrible and overpriced fucking instruments for decades, all the while trying as hard as they can to fuck up their classic, iconic designs by shoving shitty automatic tuner systems/digital outputs/whatever other bullshit on them.

i can't find the article right now, but i swear i've read an article that said one of the bigshots at Gibson was uber-cocky for years and refused to listen to any criticism, saying "people will buy whatever we make, because we are the best". i'm paraphrasing but his quotes were just as obnoxious, if not more.

anyway. i love many different types of guitars, and there are plenty of other cool brands out there, but the cherry picked Gibsons were always my favs. it's a shame that's how this company's gonna end.

any Gibson lovers here? not the overpriced dad instruments , the actual great ones

I used a Les Paul this one time. I'm not an experienced guitar player, but I liked my Yamaha Pacifica better. Gotta love that strat-style body.

Gibsons sound good but i've never played one where i didn't find the neck to be an unwieldy baseball-bat type affair. I've played a heap of guitars but for various reasons only bought Ibanez. I picked up a '76 "lawsuit" Les Paul for a steal a while ago and I like it way better than any of the official Gibson Les Pauls i've played.

no offense towards you personally SJ but i never once understood assholes who bitch about the shape of necks or whatever. it's usually the same type of cunts who swap and fiddle with their pickup configurations even though they can't play a straight chord. C shape, V shape. who fucking cares. the only thing that matters is if it sounds good

Yeah, I'd take a Telecaster over any Gibson guitar tbh

I have my preferences but I'm not like a giant tone nerd or anything; I genuinely feel like the cut of a neck changes the feel of my playing. Maybe that's cause i'm deploying some kind of bad technique maybe, who knows? But in terms of comfort for playing i've just found that I don't like the feel of Gibson necks ~generally. Maybe it's actually something to do with the action or the fretboard and i just feel like it's the neck? *shruggie*

to be fair though, your complaint is not uncommon, and it's part of what i was talking about when i mentioned their production standards have dropped dramatically in the last few decades. the vintage gibsons have kind of a reputation as having more finely sculpted necks because, you know, back then they had a dude sitting there with a razor or something shaving away at the wood until it was right.

i think i mainly don't care that much about necks because i have big hands, so it doesn't make a big difference for me either way.

Generally I find that if I play a guitar for awhile I can get used to a variety of differences in terms of neck, action, etc. However, coming from primarily playing Fender electrics, Gibson necks feel kind of weird to me too. They seem "hard" and less "pliable" than Fender necks.... I know that is complete nonsense, it's just kind of a visceral thing. But like i said I think a lot of it is just that I have never owned a Gibson and the feeling is a bit alien at first when I pick one up.

Something I will say about LPs though is they are too heavy. Playing standing up with an LP will actually start to rub my weirdly protruding rib cage after awhile, causing discomfort.

It matters a lot I think. For example I prefer larger necks because I have bad technique and tend to strangle a smaller one, which causes the strings to bend too much or hitting strings I don't want to. A larger neck gives me more space to work and compensates enough for me. Especially when doing fingerpicking or combining slide with fretwork. Also my first guitar was an old parlor Stella with a huge neck.

With a slimmer neck I find I have to be much more precise and pin-pointy, using fingertips instead of my finger.

Gibson fucked up because even if I wanted one there is no entry point. If I am new to the instrument and like Angus Young or Slash or whatever, there is nothing cool for the budget consumer. The epiphone headstock is a non-starter for me and many others I am sure - Fender did not make this mistake.

Fender is currently courting young female guitarists with shortscale stuff that is great and affordable, and even their budget stuff (squier classic vibe) is leagues above Gibson/Epiphone equivalents. Epiphones have that stupid ugly headstock, so if you can't get past that you are looking at a price tag of at least $800 for a base model that does not even come close to acceptable IMHO. Guitar sales are down across the board for all companies - thats why Fender has "FenderPlay" to entice people and make actually learning the instrument less intimidating. Shouldn't be that difficult for Gibson, but here we are.

I remember when I picked up guitar ~15 years ago people were already talking about Gibson as being on the downslide due to all sort of antics like attempting to make Les Pauls a Gutiar Center exclusive, having the federal government raid their facilities for illegally imported Brazilian rosewood, a general downward trend in the quality of their instruments, etc.

look at Fender in the 60s though when it belonged to CBS. It's possible Gibson could bounce back, but yeah, I also just read about how the guitar market is spiraling downward because kids don't listen to guitar music anymore

Anyone got a fav mid-range guitar? I've got an Ibanez AR Standard and it's a great little axe for the price range; heaps of tone options, it really sings on the higher frets, and it's as comfortable to play as anything premium.

i could certainly believe that. very sad.
i guess there are more kids buying loopers and midi controllers these days than guitars. appreciating and understanding the architecture of music is a dying feat. songs today consist of drum loops, basslines and compressed singing diseased with fake affectations.

what kind of price range?
tbh i always saved up for the thousand dollar and upward instruments, but i own an epiphone 335 style guitar that i'm fond of.

I like to play barre chords up and down the neck, for personal reasons

The fat-necked seagull my dad lent me is causing me to hurt mightily in the base of my thumb muscles after a 3.5 min tune

Anyone know an acoustic that doesn’t suck fux that has a littler neck for my achy breaky hands

My favorite electric is the now-discontinued discount Mexican strat

I learned on one and never really moved past it. Just feels like home. Stock everything (except graphite saddles ofc) sounds amazing with just some amp dirt
