Where would you rank the singles compilation album Japanese Whispers?

Not particularly fond of the rest. But all of these are top quality and it’s flabbergasting to type it out and take stock.

i still rate the s/t (specifically, the Japanese version that includes outtakes which were among the best of the era, easily) pretty highly. Doesn't hurt that I first saw the End of the World vid on MTV-U at a summer camp as a teenager, but even so!

Get yourself a Carnage Visors listen if you haven't yet. Faith era long instrumental that accompanied a movie played before the show during the era. Amazing stuff.

It's a compilation. But if I were to rank SP albums, I'd put Pisces Iscariot at #4.

yes, it's the perfect display of both sides of their sound at the peak of their career. what's not to get

but by all means, continue making these arbitrary posts about people ranking certain albums higher in a discography then you personally would, it's really doin' some damage

Sorry, what exactly are we supposed to be doing here? I didn’t mean to damage you.

I always think I should like Brotherhood more than I do, but the songs just aren’t as strong as some of their other stuff. Movement is also underrated.

no i was being sarcastic with the last thing. as i said before, that list is my personal ranking, but as with all my rankings i like to think there's at least a bit of objectivity involved. Brotherhood to me, aside from Substance, is the perfect introduction to New Order, especially for someone who was already into Joy Division. That first half is them in "rock band" mode which is a pretty good transition off the JD stuff, but then from Bizarre Love Triangle onward it's the stuff that truly set them apart

Movement to me, on the other hand, is just a "lite" version of Closer. Not horrible or anything, but it has none of the charm or character that really made N.O. their own band, and the best stuff from that time was the singles (Ceremony, Temptation, Everything's Gone Green) imo

i guess it's also worth noting that I got into N.O. almost at random via the Siren's Call album when I was like 14, before I ever knew who JD were, so I have more of a proclivity for the actual New Order sound vs. just the band that followed up JD as some seem to see them as. I went into them with completely different mindsets and had no expectations for one over the other, only finding out about the connection later on

Agree that their early singles/ EGG EP is better than Movement. In fact I think that it the best stuff that they ever did. I just think that Brotherhood sounds like cocaine music. Way to frantic to be that enjoyable. I think their best rock stuff is the early post-punk music and maybe Get Ready.

i certainly see them as separate bands, even the early NO stuff is way more experimental with synths than JD ever were. that being said, i still think that movement is underrated. it has some good songs, yet it meanders and feels monotone. But how could anyone deny Dreams Never End? that song is better than most of their catalog, in my opinion, and sounds very little like JD

also, I am a big Technique fan, that album has a good balance and pace

some of it is frantic to the point of almost sounding like it's going to fall apart, but it never does so to me it just comes off as exciting. "Weirdo" is a perfect example, and that's one of my favorite N.O. songs

also I feel like Bernard got better as a singer between Low-Life and that one, so it has that going for it as well without losing the edge or not-completely-refined nature of their sound
