If he doesn't think With Every Light is a great song but thinks Solara is a suitable comeback single....that's quite worrying

Or he got closer to what he wanted to accomplish with solara than what he wanted to get out of with every light

well then it's sad that Solara now represents any sort of accomplishment to him given how underwhelming it is from start to finish

As much as I appreciate adult contemporary and Sarah Mclachlan inspired songs, I have to say that With Every Light and If there is a God were the probably the first time I really started to wonder if Billy was losing his song writing tack. These songs do nothing for me.

I think With Every Light is okay but it does have that VH1 adult contemporary feel to it.

Finally, the ideal Machina tracklist debate is concluded once and for all:

1. Slow Dawn
2. Lucky 13
3. Cash Car Star
4. Real Love
5. BSBT (Heavy)
6. SIYL
7. Try
8. Dross (Alt) *Fades into 00:30 snippet intro to Speed Kills - Fade out*
9. Go
10. LMGTWTY
11. This Time
12. The Imploding Voice *Fades into 01:40 answerphone excerpt from G&TGC*
13. Wound
14. With Every Light
15. Home
16. AOI

Clocks in at 66 mins.
Would've liked Vanity on here but don't see where it could fit sequentially and already too long.

a lot of M2 always sounded to me like Bill just ran half the mix busses through an all-encompassing distortion, especially on tracks like Real Love & White Spyder where even the drums sound like they were hit with white noise

I think the piano and vocals version of ITIAG is wonderful. The arrangement gives a strong Mellon Collie theme vibe with the piano.

Then BSBT doesn't make the album at all.

The FAEOMM version is boring, and the problem with making a Machina tracklist is practically all the good songs are mid-tempo and become a homogenous slop if arranged together.
Few of the heavy tracks have aged well but BSBT is one of the better ones compared to dirge like TEG or HMM. So in terms of "these lists" the heavy version of BSBT is the only version that could reasonably be considered, the other versions fucking blow. It's one of the worst songs of the era.

Can’t believe Soot and Stars never makes an ideal Machina tracklist. Should close out the album.

for all the skeptics who thought MCIS "should have been a single disk" billy gave this a go with machina and it was a flop
he really should have just done the double album
no idea what should have made the cut/promoted if that's the case.
at this point M1 and M2 are distinct albums to me and will keep being regardless of the reissue.

here's my single disk Machina

1 cash car star (single 1)
2 lucky 13
3 stand inside your love (single 2)
4 real love
5 Let me give the world to you (single 4)
6 I of the mourning
7 imploding voice
8 If there is a god

9 Glass
10 With Every Light
11 white spider
12 Speed kills
13 Glass and the ghost children
14 The Everlasting Gaze (single 3)
15 Age of Innocence

There's lots of songs I had a very hard time cutting, but like Woody points out, if you leave them all in, it just turns into this mid-tempo dredge. side b also serves like a focused mini glass album... with a strong short "LOVE" sequence on side A

No offense to anyone, but I never understand why Imploding Voice makes so many revised Machina tracklists. I feel like that song was the beginning of Billy’s “repeat one generic line over and over and over again” writing style.

Slow Dawn > every Machina era song

Not including Slow Dawn on any remix is punishable by death

In My Body also needs to be included

Just three minutes shorter

Cash Car Star should be left off of every Machina tracklist. Garbage song.

Agree with this too, but for the aforementioned homogeny.
It’s a relatively short and immediate track in an album of comparatively little dynamism or energy.

Machina’s best tracks are mid-tempo songs that all channel the same vibe.

Then there are numerous bloated experiments that either don’t develop or bludgeon the same idea for 5 minutes or more.
My original listing didn’t ******* CCS or BSBT but it included Vanity and G&TGC and much longer as a result.

The Imploding Voice has a pretty good hook, a decent tempo and builds to a climax. I wouldn’t miss it, but it was one of the standouts when I first heard the album and it has staying power imo.

& With Every Light is just beautiful to me, a rare moment of utter, sympathetic sincerity for post-Adore Bill. I just really like the theme of "the suffering's almost over" and "look ma the sun is shining on me" gets me

Lyrically, Cash Car Star is one of Billy's weaker efforts and it always bugged me that he used a few lines from "We're an American Band". I understand why he did it but it always felt like such a Hootie move.

That said, the track still sounds killer to me, especially with the speed metal lead parts. I wouldn't call it brilliant by any means but I'd still take it over a lot of the stuff Billy has put out since the Machina era (or during it).

Playing it on Leno in support of the second, free Machina album was one of the coolest things they ever did, tbh

I find the lyrics kinda inspirational and I really love the hook.

Obligatory nod to how nice the acoustic version they played once in Japan is and I wish there were a high quality recording of it.

I have a really hard time cutting anything off a Machina playlist, but there's too much stuff for everything to make the cut, nor should it. The stupid 3-disc version I made was just for purposes of trying to shove everything into a possible narrative order and I recognize it's way too bloated.

If I had to trim it down to one disc, allowing that Glass' Theme is relatively short:

1 Glass' Theme
2 The Imploding Voice
3 Stand Inside Your Love
4 The Sacred + Profane
5 Glass And The Ghost Children
6 Raindrops + Sunshowers
7 Lucky 13
8 Speed Kills
9 Blue Skies Bring Tears
10 The Everlasting Gaze
11 Wound
12 Try
13 In My Body
14 Slow Dawn
15 Home
16 Age Of Innocence

Still doesn't fucking work for me. Feels too truncated.
