OP doubts billy saw a CD when discogs states the CD version was released in 1988. Just because regular people still bought vinyl because it was still way cheaper at that time doesn't mean stores couldn't have had it.

Billy also said that it was the only copy he could find. The story wouldn't have been any less believable if he said he found it on cassette.

I remember it well. I downloaded loads of live show from that site using my University's amazing 2meg download speed (how times change...) and then zipped them onto about 90 3.5inch floppy disks for transport home.

In fact I think I should blame Smashing Pumpkins and SPAA for my eventually shitty final degree grade because of all the time I spent downloading music.

Well... them and internet porn.
