current government bullshit aside, burma was the colonial name and they don't want anything to do with it. they're proud of their independence, regardless of how fucked the ruling party is.

and yeah i feel a bit guilty about supporting the gov't by being here. choose your battles, i guess. i'm doing my best to sleep at illegal unlicensed guesthouses, eat street food and take the 2-day slow ferry instead of the posh tourist boat.

it totally was. it was like the titanic compared to my boat. all new polished hardwood ... fancy cabins and shit. but it looked hella boring....this place isnt really backpacker-friendly. it mainly caters to tours/package deal/hop- off-the-bus-snap-a-photo-get-back-on-type tourists. that said, even the 'busy tourist spots' have only a handful of foreigners. it's a really interesting place. I'm killing time in mandalay now waiting for a bus to the mountains.
