Default Did JC really play on "Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1?"

I know he's listed on the album liner as playing drums on "Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1," but did Jimmy REALLY play drums on the album? I remember seeing something that came out a while ago stating that Jimmy rejoined the band just for live shows, and honestly, it doesn't really sounds like his drumming on the album. A mild-efforted recreation, at best.

Yae or nay?

I swear there hasn't been a recording that's done justice to Jimmy since Machina.

The old guy's just cashin' a check at this point. I wish it was different, but it's clear that not a lot of artistic thought was put into the comeback album.

stuff like 'ghosts' sounds like it was pieced together from jimmy drumsample library. i'm gonna guess he recorded something but actual songs were shaped and arranged in the computer when billy was finishing them up. because it's more cost effective. and billy ain't gonna not save money when opportunity strikes.

and yeah the sound of Shiny is pretty clearly, to me at least, the sound of a live drummer being track, then edited, sample-replaced & mixed to the point of it might as well having been a drum machine

this is usually fine & well when you're just working with middle-of-the-road drummers, but Jimmy fucking Chamberlin? HELL NAH

It's not paranoid to imagine that on the tracks grabbed from the "Day For Night" recordings still Tommy Lee is playing the drums. Or even Mike Byrne...

Silvery and Travels are definitely loops. That's 2/8 songs looped.

Agreed that the sound of the drums is so bad it doesn't sound like Jimmy at all.

Billy probably protools the shit out of the drums "in order to compete in the market"

No

Ironically, Solara is the one you can tell Jimmy's playing.

The cymbals in particular sound artificial and sampled. It’s really disappointing. Jimmy has been the best SP musician since 1987, and his sound was garbage on Shiny Vol 1.

When I say “dumb” I mean presumptuous. It’s a compliment to jimmy’s timing that said songs appear to be a loop. My bet is that he’s playing those songs live.

Also, he’s not doing his usual boisterous fills and y’all say “it’s not jimmy.” Are you completely unaware of everything else he’s capable of? Silvery sometimes, with sympathy are two great examples of that classic jimmy groove that none of the other drummers could replicate. And then there’s marchin on.. just as many he man fills as solara.

I expect better from netphoria.

I wouldn't say so. Why would he? And why would Billy say "do nothing except the beat"? Jimmy by his nature would throw in a few cymbals and little rolls. There's no way he'd just keep it so one dimensional.

Again presumptuous. There’s actually an interview where jimmy says on travels he had this whole thing arranged, but Rubin had told him to just play the beat and they loved it because it opened up the song in a way they hadn’t expected. So there ya go, he was produced to not play in his usual way and he played the damn thing live.

Do we know if Billy really played on it? I mean, BC is known for his high quality work and created a bunch of hits in the 90s. But this album wasn't very good. I really doubt someone of his caliber would be involved.

That makes it even worse then.

Hopefully Rubin is not involved ever again with SP.

The songs weren’t written with Jimmy in mind and it shows.

Not exactly what Jimmy said tho. He did they were trying to get travels right, but for some reason they couldn't. There was something out of place. Then they tried simplifying the drums and it worked straight away.

I can confirm that JC does not play on this album, or any album

What we think of as "Jimmy" is an elaborate drum machine, and Mr. C is Milli Vanilli-ing it up in live settings

Rubin's work (or rather, "presence," which seems to be the more accurate term) on Ogilala made it probably about as good as it could have been. but then he comes 'round & is involved in what coulda been the first "true" Pumpkin album in quite some time and badaBING makes it sound like some robotic reinterpretation with Corgan croaking over the top, with one of the best drummers in the world essentially being over-produced into a glorified drum machine

at least Iha's parts are cool. all 5 of them or whatever
