It was a travesty that 'Waiting' wasn't on the album. 'Once In A While' would've been a good addition too. Both songs much better than 'Annie Dog'.

Still my favorite album of all time.
Sometimes I forget that BC actually wrote good music 20+ years ago. |

Listening to the deluxe tracks now. The Blank Page (early version) is quite lovely

I think Waiting is the single best SP rarity, but come on, it doesn't fit the album at all. It actually sounds more like a Machina song than an Adore song.

Adore to me is the moment when Billy officially loses his mind and stops being humble and scared of failure enough to let others reel in his artistic and egotistical excesses. For one thing, he eschews having a strong and musically astute producer and tries to produce the whole thing on his own, eventually hiring a few different producers but never really settling on one person or one vision. I'd say this was a huge fuck up because Butch and Flood are musical geniuses as well as brilliant band psychologists. Without their mediating influence, Billy is toast.
It has some very interesting songs and shows Billy really honing his craft. But ultimately any musical merits to be found on the record are spoiled by the harshly self conscious sounding overwrought production of the whole thing. Much like Machina 1, the album just sounds harshly and excruciatingly measured, like every bar was obsessed over...and not in a good, Steely Dan, sort of way....more like in an oppressive and suffocating "Billy is a neurotic control freak" way. I consider the album a modest success but mostly a failure. Much like Dylan from the 70s-90s, Billy from 1998-present often comes tantalizing close to recapturing his former glory (especially his b sides and demos) but he never QUITE pulls it off. His best efforts from Adore and onward are like dead middle strikes that inexplicably go wide at the last second. Oh well. I still give him credit for trying...and I don't mean that sarcastically. |

To me, Adore is the only album on which breaking the "formula" worked
and it's the best SP album |

very much echoing everyone who said adore would be amazing if it was just a stripped down acoustic record, a la to sheila, nightmare, annie-dog, etc. would've been a natural step after the bombast of MCIS
definitely a turning point for billy. maybe all the molly just killed his brain Last edited by Ram27 : 02-20-2018 at 09:34 AM. |

It's pretty goddamned great and I still think the Judas O version of Saturnine kicks ass all these years later. Could have been a great Ava Adore B-side (not to shit on Czarina, but I'd have swapped it).

I like the sound of the original 4 playing together more than I like slightly better lyrics. Adore does have a few good songs but it has more duds than anything preceding it. I also prefer drums in my music. And fuzz. And at least some semblance of fortitude, I'm not a saddo.

while i do love the album, i remember the distinct gut-sinking sensation upon hearing the drum/space bass pulse at the start of ava adore

also never have been able to warm up to the "sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-shame" line
the rest of the lyrics are dumb -- obvious rhymes and superficial poetry -- but, within the context of the band narrative, the album's mood and imagery, the forlorn riff, they are all the more impactful for it neat-oh |

intro crickets and nylon arpeggios of to sheila still send me easily into reverie, though i'll admit that much of the why is built from pure nostalgia.
beautiful untethered lyricism here in the verses, though, like the aforementioned "shame," the chorus has always felt a tad forced to me. "you make me real /strong as i feel" ... i get it, but still: oh-noh |
