Well, this is awkward. I'm out to meet a friend, and I can see two of the folks that I'm pretty sure were ignoring me.

I don't want to approach them, because I'm not sure what they think of me. I wanna wait until I get in touch with the boyfriend of the friend I invited out that night for an update on what's happening, at least.

Oh god, I think they may have entered the same pub I'm supposed to meet my friend at. Is my life scripted or some shit? Is there a studio audience laughing at me?

The whole situation you're in is pretty complicated, so I don't really understand why you can't talk to them before you talk to the boyfriend. Would you mind explaining?

I guess I was just scared of having an interaction coloured by them thinking I suck. At least if I made sure everything was cleared up with the other guy and was clear on if the girl is okay with me or has expressed negative things about me to my other friends, I'd be clear on the nature of the interaction.

They ended up seeing me, and things seemed to go normally. Greeted me, hugged me, set up a plan to hang out. Don't know if this is evidence that everything is in my head, or if they were just being polite.

I kinda hate small talk, it's feels like a very transparent and obvious way of saying "I just wanna talk to you, but there's no pressing reason for me to other than my desire to have your attention, so I'll talk about things that fascinate neither of us."

I actually sometimes contemplate jumping straight into topics that interest me, like going up to someone and just asking them them if rhey think the mind can be explained simply as the activity of the brain or not. Or their thoughts on dark matter or some shit. It'd be weird, but we'd get to the good stuff faster than if I just asked them "so, did you grow up around here?"

I generally enjoy the company of people who are interesting from the start. These are some of the more exciting topics of conversation for me, as well. I guess it helps me weed out those who are mentally incompatible with me....it's hard enough for me to get through all my daily necessary inane interactions without needing any from a (potential) significant other.
