ULTIMATE POLL: MELLON COLLIE VS. INFINITE SADNESS
This is it folks, Dawn to Dusk against Twilight to Starlight. We all know MCIS is the zenith of TSP, but which of its two disks is superior?

Imma go with the latter. First you have two epics (Ruby, XYU). Then there are the singles (33 and 1979) which are the very essence of the dark, sweet atmosphere of MCIS. Furthermore, the two openers (WBFTT-Bodies) are the best in the entire canon. And finally, that chill closing sequence is so romantic and contains what just might be their best (certainly one of their most emotional and heart-rending) songs: By Starlight).
On top of all this, there are those little gems that sparkle like the silmarils of Feanor: In the Arms of Sleep and Stumbeline. I say Twilight to Starlight! What about you, friends? |

Its a tough call. The first half of Dawn to Dusk does not let up, it may be the best "side" of a record they ever did. Porcelina has a slight edge on Ruby for me, but its very close. My pick probably changes day to day.

Twilight to Starlight is the clear winner here. It's a close call in the sense that both discs are evenly packed with great songs delivered beautifully. But there is ultimately something about the breadth, depth and overall mood of Twilight to Starlight that I find positively enchanting. "Stumbleine," a solo acoustic demo tucked between the epic "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" and the tidal wave crush of "X.Y.U.," is the ultimate example of this.
There are just more emotional highs and lows on Twilight to Starlight, and it comes across a little darker and edgier as a whole. In short, I highly recommend Twilight to Starlight. It is a great listen for fans old and new alike. |

Dawn to Dusk for me. Not only does it have better songs, but it stands alone as an album. If MCIS had just been a single album, and it was that, I would've been happy. It begins great, flows nicely through rock and more mellow moments, and comes to a massive conclusion with Galapagos / Muzzle / Porcelina.
TTS is more adventurous for sure, but it has a few let downs like Scorched Earth, XYU (which I've never liked), and stuff like Lily, which shows that if disc 2 had just been the album it definitely would've been a let down. Sure, I'd be missing Ruby, 33, 1979, Bodies etc, but I still think the quality of disc 1 overcomes that. |

i like what john said about the mood and darkness of twilight 2 starlight. that's what does it for me.
but yes, the first disc is really hard to put in second place. there's that unholy triad of cyber-metal visceralitude (jellybelly, zero, hinw) and then the incredible finish (galapogos, muzzle, porcelina) that are hard to dismiss. not to mention fuck you and love back to back! madre de dios. hard to choose, no doubt. in hindsight, i should of in-cluded an "impossible to pick" option. |

i appreciate Twilight for the extremities it takes in a mere matter of tracks, not to mention it has some of their best-ever songs with stuff like Bodies, 33, 1979 & By Starlight. Dawn to Dusk may be the single-most solid record they ever put out tho, including Siamese Dream. so i suppose it's a battle between extremities & solitude (?) and frankly i think they even each other out
