Also, Davin, I remember you being VERY into Smashing Pumpkins and all of Billy's projects in 2007/2008. I consistently remember you being one of the few people who managed to stay positive during this whole time. When did you start to have your interest wane in the band?
more or less when Jimmy left.

i saw the metro show with the new line-up, as well as the "soundcheck entry" show with mike byrne @ mr smalls in pittsburgh...but somehow, even after seeing tristessa live with only 20 people, it wasn't the same.

i thought Oceania was OK....but i didn't enjoy it as much as Zeitgeist. say what you will, but for me Zeitgeist was more about the come back, goign to Paris, reconnecting with the online community, etc. All that excitement was lost by the time Oceania came out, as the Teargarden stuff really tested my patience and loyalty. And even though Oceania got good reviews and was supposedly "true to form". i thought the lyrical content was weak, i thought it was not nearly as bold as Zeitgeist...nor did it take as many chances (though it had better production)...and frankly i didn't really connect with any of the songs.

when they played the Oceania show at Allstate Arena (formerly ROsemont Horizon) in "chicago"...and they undersold so much that they only played in HALF the venue (never seen this in all my years seeing shows there, especially for a "hometown" band...) i just had a sinking feeling that my obsession with this band was in some ways coming to an end. i dont have anything super negative to say about Oceania -- it just didn't resonate with me AT ALL.

Since 2008, I come back to Netphoria once a year (yep, I'm doing it today)... I'm having the same feelings as Davin toward Billy's music.
But, I'll still be giving him a chance everytime he will put something out.

Cheers Davin

I can understand why some people find this a difficult question to ask. At some point over the past 24 years we have all respected what Billy and his bands have accomplished, but we have also struggled with what we have heard either from the media or from personal experiences - that he can be difficult or mean to people.

I respect him as a person because he does what he wants and does not appear to compromise his beliefs despite what people say. Now, I have not always agreed with his artistic choices or his behavior in interviews, etc., but he does not exist to please me or anyone else. He considers himself to be an artists and he creates the art that we wants to at any given time. We ultimately choose whether or not we want to support him if his art is interesting to us.

it doesn't matter what i think about him personally and don't know him personally. it goes w/o saying that he seems to often exhibit a very strong [some might say aggressive or overbearing] personality, and doesn't shy away from conflict, maybe seeks it, maybe creates it where it doesn't need to be b/c of whatever.

artistically there's a lot to respect. he worked tirelessly, toured all the time, put in more effort than many to become successful, and did. strong will and strong work ethic are things generally respected in this culture. his work post-zwan often feels uninspired, bland, average, which is a shame considering the heights he reached before that.

and this is nothing that hasn't been said a million times, i'm just bored and slacking off b/c i lack the focus and strength of will of a billy corgan lol. i envy that, really. i wish i could muster up the will to push hard enough to do sth and get somewhere, but i have never had that sort of motivation. so yeah, massive respect and envy to him for that.

didn't you record like 100 albums worth of songs? i'd consider that pushing quite hard. surely you need a good amount of motivation for that. no?

right that's the macro level. this is exactly what is annoying about alex jones. on the macro level, yes they sound like they're right but then on the micro level when you listen to their explanations for things it's because of obama and socialists.

if you actually listen to bill's interview with jones it's a lot of fucking blathering nonsense. bill has a bunch of buzz phrases and he strings them together in a pretty haphazard way, like he's just masquerading as an intellect. much like alex jones.

also to answer my question, no

Quote:
One anecdote I particularly enjoyed he told a guy ahead of me during the meet & greet afterwards. He stated that "Thru The Eyes of Ruby" was one of his favorite Mellon Collie songs, but Billy didn't initially want to put it on the album. Jimmy begged him to put it on but Billy said he didn't have any lyrics for it so he was just gonna leave it off. Jimmy urged him to go write the lyrics immediately, which he did, and it was on the album.
