Default writing a decent metal track is pretty challenging.

i'm making my first extensive foray into the heady realms of black/speed/death/filth sorta stuff and i'm finding it really interesting learning all the atonal, dissonant scales and things. can anyone recommend some web sites explaining metal scales and structures and stuff? i find it easy enough writing individual riffs and chord progressions and whatnot, but finding just the right notes i want for quick licks and solos usually gets the better of me. what do you think, do you find it easy writing heavy? more importantly, do you think there's much originality left in metal, generally speaking? is there much that hasn't been done with it yet?

I play some metal. And yes it is hard to make it sound good.

It's not hard to just play fast notes.

right now my track sounds like fugazi and powermad jamming Zero in the batcave

not bad but i'm finding it awkward changing the key from E to G for the chorus

YES THATS RIGHT, A METAL CHORUS

Em is G major yo. If you're going to G minor you could throw in an Edim (the flat 5th is the minor 3rd of the Gm), or hit an Eb power chord or major chord which won't be as dissonant and might give a more solid sense of a transition. It depends on what the two parts sound like, but it shouldn't be too hard to make it work

quick heads up: nobody, anywhere, has ever used the word 'filth' as a metal subgenre. people at metal gigs may be inclined to beat you up over details like this. Guy i went to Slayer and Mastodon with got punched in the back of the head for referring to 'diabolus en musica' as 'musica en diabola'. Brutal.
