Default Drake - Views

Album of the year. Much better than the new Kanye.

Also a candidate for best rap album of the decade in my opinion.

It's better than Nothing Was The Same but not a patch on Take Care or If You're Reading This. A couple of top-shelf beats but too many cringey lyrics and protracted autotune bits. Drake is at his most entertaining when he's rapping and rapping cocky. Needs a big mean banger like "Energy" or "Lord Knows". Not bad by any means but a step down from his recent form.

And no i'm still not sold on PARTYNEXTWEEK

It could have been a 17 song album. It's still mostly great but there is some filler. The Majid Jordan interlude is horrible. One of the worst things Drake has ever done. The Rihanna song is pretty bad too. The song that samples Mary J Blige isn't bad but it sounds out of place on an album that is mostly trap / downtempo.

I like Drake's rapping on this one a lot even if it is kind of emo. I was really paying attention to the lyrics the whole time I was listening. I prefer the emo stuff over the bragging stuff.

So you think it's got a bunch of filler and it could be shorter but you also think it's rap album of the decade?

Well not a bunch of filler but still three songs that could have been cut. 17 out of 20 songs are good which is still pretty impressive.

And I said it was a candidate but I think Yeezus would probably win RAOTD

You know it's occured to me that since Mals and Trots left no one here likes rap music enough to keep this thread at the top. That's just one of the many reasons I'm not on here anymore a lot. My taste in music has actually changed and matured as I've gotten older and most people here still like the stuff they did in high school such as the Smashing Pumpkins. This board really does suck.

Most people here are broken and damaged just like Billy Corgan.

Cat Wheel I love rap but I haven't given Drake a try yet. What's a good starter track or two

A lot of the newer rap fails to grab me. The flows are never as dizzying/visceral as Wu Tang, and the beats are never as crazy-making as Public Enemy/bombsquad or lush/lazy-making as Tribe Called Quest. So why not just listen to the good old stuff, I reason

Yeah I can see where you are coming from. Drake isn't for everyone. It probably helps to be into electronic / ambient/ downtempo music which a lot of people here don't seem to be into. You're more of a rap purist who likes the classic golden age stuff when jazz and soul music where being sampled. I'm kind of over that stuff. I like the new electronic direction that hip hop is going in.
