Every time I try to read about the Machina mystery/concept I get about 3 sentences in and Billy's Jesus complex becomes so outrageously apparent I have to check out. It is so hamfisted and cringe inducing. At least some of the tunes hold up.

Yeah, the Machina concept is sadly no Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero and loses interests along the way. It doesn't seem like enough is there with just the songs from Machina I and II to tell the story in full. Even with 3 discs worth of music, it feels disjointed and convoluted. Honestly, if Billy never told us the concept, I doubt anyone would have ever even picked up on it from the songs we got. Where as Year Zero was well thought out and presented, but it went beyond just the music and album artwork to tell its tale.

Actually Year Zero was meant to have an accompanying HBO mini series with Carnivŕle creator Dan Knauf helping co-write Trent Reznor's story. It was meant to lead into a sorta Part 2 to the album. Sadly, HBO pulled the plug though recent political/social events reignited that spark to finish the story. Nine Inch Nails last two EPs, especially Add Violence, seem to connect with the world of Year Zero.

I think Billy should have the chance to have his vision released as he originally intended. I think his idea for a performance or album by his fictional band contained within a bigger album should be fleshed out. It would be groundbreaking. They could call it Mechanical Animals or something. It could be about the fictional band The Mechanical Animals.

MACHINA/pt 1/The Machines of God 'turns' 18 today (Feb 28/2000). It's nice to see where so many younger fans have found and resonated with this work, which despite being often misunderstood or disregarded has seen a sort of restoration with time. On the question of when a reissue would be made available (reuniting pts 1 + 2 with a copious amount of additional work), the legal squabble with our inherited label continues (meaning they purchased our catalog from Gish to Machina from old masters EMI and take scant possession of the legacy, much less any present or future plans to promote said work). Which is a curious thing... That said, I have made overtures to purchase the catalog by putting together a group of investors; only to be rebuffed, because 'it's too valuable to be sold.'

no
if the label owns the masters and they don't want to do anything with what they own... that's their business.

Best case billy pays all the costs to realize his re-imagined machina and someone 'leaks' the material.. "oops"
but billy wants $$$, so he won't do that.

Do what exactly?

- Corgan reacquired the rights to the whole catalog.
- He then contracted EMI to distribute the whole remaster campaign.
- EMI was acquired by Universal Music Group, which included that deal
- UMG, while now contractually obligated to release it, put it on the back burner, probably because they don't care about it

If Corgan released it, he could be in violation of the contract he signed to EMI, which was acquired by UMG

No way he refuses to get paid the second time. Always found the label holdup with Machina reissue incredibly ironic.

Maybe he should just press rough mixes of the whole thing to 25 vinyl copies and just give them to a select few with instructions to leak them

I mean, the label probably doesn't want to deal with it cause they don't believe it's financially good. If they had some kind of figure beforehand...

This is disappointing. It must also be very sad for any artist to not even own your own recordings.

It's never going to come out, not only do they not think it will sell but also Corgan wants to endlessly tinker around with it in the studio which I'm sure would be then charged to the label. It's not a straightforward reissue at all.

Yep, he'll want a fancy box set, with a lot of pricey remixing/remastering. The label will lose money for sure. They'd be lucky to sell 50k copies.

Pale Scales plays over one of the DVD menus on the Greatest Hits DVD. Sounds like a studio recording to me.

so if I understand, they are contractually obliged to release it (as they bought EMI's contract) but there apparently is no time frame, so they may never technically release it (maybe 1000 years from now). right?

As far as I remember, Billy had to negotiate every reissue individually and then EMI was bought over before they signed anything for Machina.

The label wont sell because they think the catalogue is too valuable, yet they aren't doing anything to actively earn money off of it. Strange business model.

And this thread has more than 3/4 of a million views to date. THAT should tell you something in terms of interest in a Machina reissue.
