Default Is attacking people for being Mormon ok?

Is it ok to attack people who are Mormons, more so than people of other religions? Is Mormonism inherently a stupider thing to believe than anything else?

No.

But I don't see why anyone should attack any religious belief unless it is in the context of that religious belief trying to dictate public/civil policies.

bingo

if someone identifies themselves as a Mormon based on the actions of the church, i'd like for someone to explain to me why it's not ok to call them out for it.

it they identify themselves as a Mormon but don't agree with anything the church does, then i'd be curious as to why they choose that label, given the terrible, evil sociological associations it carries.

and RGB seems to think that one wouldn't call out a catholic or baptist for the official stances of those churches

I mean... B is a cradle Catholic and identifies as such, even though she doesn't agree with most of that church's stance on social/civil issues. That doesn't mean she's any less Catholic, right?

One can identify with a religion because of it's core beliefs/structures but can denounce or veer away from their stances on social issues.

This seems really obvious, though, and I feel like I'm in a conversation with myself.

depending on the social issues (which I think you are overlooking are often derived from the core beliefs/structures on different levels) is it really worth identifying yourself as that religion? Are you really willing to stand by what it represents, in order to be it INO (in name only) for stuff you've cherry-picked out of it?

I dunno, if someone tells me or if I realize they are catholic (for instance), I assume they at least believe in the core tenants of catholicism but I make no assumptions about their stance on birth control or gay marriage or whatever.

same with most religions except if someone self-identifies as a fundamentalist; then i just assume (probably correctly) that they are asshole bigots.

I say what I think to Mormons who are homophobic, support bigotry and hate. Anyone who believes that black people can't go to the same heaven as they are can go straight to hell. Don't get me started on how Mormonism teaches men they are the godhead in the family and that the woman is less intelligent and should be submissive to them. This is a fucked up religion that does not deserve my respect. :[

Especially since the disgusting behavior of the catholic church has finally hit close to home. (Both of them know Bishop Finn and Ratigan)

http://ncronline.org/news/accountabi...judge-thursday

Her aunt was talking about how last Sunday the accused Bishop's assistant made some speech about it. The level of denial was thick because she side-stepped the child rape and focused on how "sweet and eloquent" the speech was.

i don't think it's ok to "attack" anyone. it's ok to attack mormonism though, given the right circumstances.

i would say so. it's stupider to believe mormonism than to believe that the world is round.

in an environment that allows criticism of theological doctrines (maybe theological academia?) it would be totally ok to deconstruct the false assumptions that seem to be the base of mormon beliefs

Same here. But unless we as a society make it less comfortable or acceptable for utterly unfounded beliefs that teach people to be paranoid of Magical Sky Men or believe evidence isn't important to think a certain way or that there is another life waiting for people after they die, then it's going to continue.

Religion as a whole removes humanity from the human experience.

You should see what happens when they come to my door. I always go straight for the jugular and ask them what they think about black people going to their heaven. The look on their face is usually priceless.
