I kind of feel like a dinosaur. I still buy and read magazines, still buy and read books, go to the library all of the time. I realize it's only a matter of time before both books and magazines are a thing of the past which will inevitably render all libraries obsolete.
It's gonna be sad. |

It's all gonna be shifted to digital gadgets like kindles or whatever. There will be no purpose for books in the digital era.
Magazines are already getting the shaft. They're going tits up at a rapid rate and many stores are just getting rid of em all together. |

but to be more specific, magazines will go way before books will. magazines are temporary news-based, short-form exposition. that translates digitally way better than a 200,000 word novel. personally I like having books in my field because I like highlighting, but I like digital because of the search ability. of course one could highlight on the computer as well, but i'm not there yet. i think there's still a generation left before books stop being physically published regularly. at least non-fiction books. fiction i have no clue.

i think there is something to having a physical book, but i'm not convinced it can't be emulated sufficiently on some sort of electronic device with technology not far away. sure, to us it seems inadequate, but i think it's short-sighted to think technology will just never recreate the book experience well enough to make books generally obsolete. i think there will be a market for 'antique' books and maybe print-on-demand for people who still want them, but physical copies may not continue to be the standard for new books

I have more books than shelf space, and I mostly keep them strewn about my bedroom floor. I used to be one of those "I must have the physical artefact!" guys, but as I get older, the less I care about arbitrary sentimentality. I would have gotten a digital reader by now if I weren't dirt poor.
I do read comic books, and I think that it will be harder to capture the variation of that medium through digital means. You can put words on a screen just as easily as you can on a page, but trying to account for all the possible page layouts, double-page spreads, juxtaposition between verso and recto images, etc is pretty hard to do on a tablet. Digital comics already seem to betray the fact that comics are about more than the isolated images in each panels, but rather the relationshipa between them, by breaking the pages apart and going through them panel by panel. I think I'll have to stick with physical comics for now. It seems like most readers are doing the same, as comics aren't following the same trend prose books are of becoming consumed more as pixels than ink. Digital sales haven't really eaten into physical sales yet. As for magazines, who the fuck cares about keeping up with Cosmo or Rolling Stone or any of the various obscure niche magazines (Moustache Aficionado Quarterly )whose content can already more conveniently be found on a webpage via a search engine? Nothing of value will have been lost. Last edited by Disco King : 01-30-2018 at 01:33 AM. |

i own about 15 books. about 5 are in my car somewhere and the rest are on the floor/table/storage bin... i should take care of them better but i dont even have room for a book case. hopefully gonna start making some more money and get a bigger apartment within the next 6 months. i want to have a screened-in porch so my kitty can go outside. getting too old for this studio stuff. or at least a bigger studio.

I know this makes me a terrible person, but I always feel deep resentment whenever I come across Instagram pages where people can amass thousands of likes just by standing and being attractive. Especially if they aren't even proper photographs, but just bathroom-mirror cellphone selfies.
Just knowing that I would never be able to get that validation. Even by posting actual content that takes effort, like photography or art and shit. Like, I'm under no illusion that I'm a remarkable artist, but I feel like what I do still has more merit than a duckface in a public restroom. The eternal neckbeard in me just REEEEEEEs at the glamour models of the world, even though what they do is totally valid and a mutual exchange between them and the people who consume their product and it doesn't affect me in any way. And now I feel embarrassed, knowing that Vixnix could have totally authored a post like this. |

No gym selfie took the blood, sweat, and tears required to make my memes.
Actually now that I think about it, they probably did. When you take into account the countless hours of exercise and healthy eating that took place prior to the photo. I don't have the willpower for that shit. So, I take back everything I've said. All those people actually are working harder than me. I've learned a lot about myself in the space of five minutes. |

DK i probably get the impression your issue isn't so much with hot people being hot as it is with an engineered social currency that rewards aesthetic value over intellectual value, which is innate to how Instagram works. TL;DR you don't hate hot people you hate capitalism

The only thing that concerns me is that if books become mostly digital like music, then they'll just be ripped and publishers will put out less and less content meaning there will be less interesting things to read. I get the majority of my reading content from libraries because ordering in books is so convenient nowadays, but I don't see how libraries can stick around if they don't offer books. I suppose they'll just be a hub with internet access, room to study and that sorta shit. |

just a possibility. it still presents the problem of how exactly writers get paid, i guess the pub company would have to pay them based on how much their book is accessed or something. but academics don't generally get paid for publishing so journals dont have to worry about that |

Yeah that's a possibility. It'll really muddy the waters as far as payment goes for the publishers and writers... I just don't see it being anything but a downside... Just like it's been for the music business.

i get the impression that textbooks are really holding the industry together at this point. barnes and noble owns hundreds of university bookstores - it is definitely what is keeping them in business. but people are getting tired of paying for textbooks because of new editions that just move shit around or need online access codes. in my last two years of university i bought two textbooks, rented two, and either went without or found a pdf of the rest. many times professors list a book just because they are supposed to. but i also bought all the non-textbook books we read in honors classes and some comprehensive books i used in my thesis. not good enough to have digital copies when you are reading entire chapters to understand a concept from scratch, imo

I still buy movies and music and books and shit in physical form because I'm a media doomsdayer who believes someday a lot of this stuff will be lost/stuck in licensing hell/spread across too many different platforms for me to afford/access.
