Default Record Store Day 2014

Are you trying to snatch up anything special? I'm not sure what I want to get yet.

i've mentioned this to you several times before - but i only mentioned "not buying new records" as far as the beginning record collector is concerned.

my point was that a new collector can amass and enjoy a greater collection by buying used vintage vinyl quicker and much more cheaply than only buying brand new releases.

ergo - that was only my advice for someone new to the game. don't buy new records. buy more used vintage.

that's just my personal opinion of a way. it's much easier to love buying records when you're only paying $5 or less a piece as opposed to $20 a piece.

also re: RSD - i have a good enough relationship with my local shops i don't actually have to participate in the "black friday madness" (which is bullshit - agreed. who wants to fight through a crowded shop with a bunch of noobs?). i just have to waltz in and pick up the 2 records i want that are sitting behind the counter for me

what if the point isn't to amass a huge collection? quality over quantity,,,

i can buy >$5 records but they'd be like egbert humperdinck sings lounge. if i want a new album, one that i like, what other option is there than to buy at the amount the price is set?

for what it's worth, RSD is a crock of shit. turning vinyl collecting into some kind of fetishism is kind of gross, if you ask me

Yeah I agree, it's just another way that the surge of interest in vinyl over the last decade has been exploited.

So you're saying only brand new music is worth listening to?

Either that or you must be trolling.

I haven't bought a record since 2002 i think. I went full mp3 then and never looked back.

vinyl still only represents a miniscule fraction of the music purchasing people do even if it is up from a decade ago. It's still a major struggle to keep a record store in business. I guess I don't understand what the big deal is if once a year these businesses get to have a big promotional thing to get people to come out and buy shit?

the first couple record store days were reasonable and enjoyable to share with the other folks in the know. since then the thing has become way out of control. i still maintain that if this was about the record store, they would produce enough copies of the various releases that anyone could walk into the store at 5pm and find what they're looking for instead of having to wait in line for hours just to have a *chance* at one of the 3 copies that record store is allotted, if they got any at all. yes, the limited items get the people in the door, but what good does it do to frustrate those who don't get what they're interested in on the ONE day a year they actually try to shop there?

anyway, like slunken i've built a rapport with a couple local shops who will hook me up with the few things i'm interested in this year, largely because they want to make sure their regular customers have a chance to get what they're hoping for. i'll be dropping off a case of beer for those guys, and then i'll be going to 2 stores who opened just recently and as a result won't have ANY RSD material on hand. i'll be happy to spend my money at those places this year.

/soapbox

no. but what am i to do when i want a record of a new band? most new band vinyl (say, i dunno, thermals a place to bury strangers, etc), even used, is upwards to $15. maybe i just don't live in a big enough city to find deafheaven vinyls for less than that??

this is what the one down the street from me looked like a long time ago; it's still just as big but they use only maybe half of it
