I know very very little about jazz but from a very broad outsider's perspective, fluid tempo seems very jazzy?

Butch Vig said the secret to the Pumpkins sound was the push-pull thing...he was referring to that fluid tempo:

"He [Jimmy Chamberlin] and Billy Corgan really have a special dynamic...how they play. It's very hypnotic and I think that was the secret to the Pumpkins sound...it had this kind of sexy swagger in a way...very hypnotic...and...the only way I can describe it is they had this push pull thing and they were locked into each other..."

Yeah and that’s 100% still happening in these performances. This quote is describing the solo at the end of hummer, which they’ve been playing live and which is definitely a solid moment of improv, and that push pull is still intact and if anything improved.

This thread is diving too deep into something that has no bearing on how the band is performing (and performing well I think, but that’s subjective) and is missing the mark. Like stating siva is 15 bpm slower, which, no. Not even true.

If we’re going to complain about anything, it’s that they’re sticking very close to how the actual records sound, which can be debated as to whether or not those recordings translate well to the stage. I do hate the obvious backing track/click track songs (like Ava adore, eye, disarm).. just perform the songs, might as well play the record over the PA.

We get it paranoid, you're really vibing on 2019 SP. The fact is they still sound like a pale imitation of themselves. And that version of Siva is still slow as fuck.

We get it house of glass, you’re not vibing on 2019 and you can’t tell the difference between tempos if it hit you in the ass.

Also, as if tempo really has bearing on how well a song is performed. They’re still ripping shreds here.

I think the band just needs some good new songs to revitalize things a little bit. One can get a little tired of the same old hits every show and quite frankly, the hits sound tired right now. It's fine that they're playing to a click and whatever, but Billy's not carrying any intensity or energy with the vocals. I think if they sped things up a little bit it'd help the energy.

They certainly sound better than the Byrne era, but it almost feels like they're going through the motions a little more now. Jimmy rarely seems into it. Iha sounds great though, I'll give em that.

I can’t even read all of your crap you’ve demonstrated numerous times that you know jack shit about music.

Or anything, for that matter.

Dude, you're talking about the guitarist for Second-Rate Rejects and an adherent to the gospel of Alex Jones.

Watch yourself!

You're ranting and raving excitedly about Smashing Pumpkins slogging through tired renditions of their 25 year old grunge hits... Don't accuse one of knowing "jack shit about music".

And bro, you're the only one here impressed with the new footage... So let me get this straight, everyone else is wrong, and you're right? Is this what you're implying? Who are you trying to kid? Do you take us for idiots? Even Reprise was making fun of the Aeroplane rendition in another thread and she's the most positive contributor here.

The band sounds old and stale... Deal with it and be honest with yourself.

Two other people are saying they dislike the vids and all of a sudden you think you have friends here. 3 people against one doesn’t mean those 3 are right, you nitwit.

House of glass I can appreciate having his own opinion about this, but doling out something that’s false as a critique is not a great way to support your critique. You, fuzzy, just say dumb shit, and though I’m in disagreement here with house of glass I’m pretty sure he’s not stoked to align himself with your moronic thinking. So shut up and fuck off, I’m smarter than you, deal with it.

And yeah sorry to say, can’t read any of your musical opinions and not laugh after having to endure your endless 3 guitar debates, and your “for Martha has octaves” bullshit.

Go listen to something else if you don’t like this. Just shut up already.

Jimmy drevpile where are you? Get in here and school this “tempo logic” please. You know your shit.

this is good, corgan's voice is the weak point. i do wish it was a little faster.

i like TAFH performance but it's waaaay to slow imo. it's the same damn riff most of the song, it's too slow for that. at least on the album a lot of the instrumental time has that crazy spoken word shit over it

I honestly love the slower tempo of this. Reminds me of sleep and the solo rips. Brings a whole new drama to the song and I’m all for it.

As for his vocals being a weak point, it’s been that way for years. Lately it’s been hit or miss so there’s improvement. At least he’s saying his consonants again.

Also, it’s rare SP sounds good on tv broadcasts. I’m saying rare. But it’s a whole other thing seeing these shows in person.

Billy currently addressing the supposed slow tempos on his Instagram feed.

I gotta wonder if said questions came from someone here?

Yeah, I hadn't seen that either - how did that one escape my "I saw everything this band ever did anywhere in public" phase? (I mean, if we're being honest, I'm still kind of in that phase, but I was REALLY in that phase back then)

If Billy's singing wasn't so raw, I would almost say that it was one of those TV appearances where they were forced to lip sync and fake play their instruments to a recorded track. (See: Darcy on the flying V?? Flemoin playing keys with a teddy bear for hands?)

Funny that El Corgo is saying the fan is wrong about the tempos. They’re playing them at album tempo which is something they never ever did before in the original run of the band. So live, at least, they are considerably slower than what we are used to.
