Milli Vanilli
the first tape i ever got was milli vanilli.
i especially loved I'm Gonna Miss You and of course Girl You Know It's True. Blame It On The Rain too. if I had to pick one today that I enjoy the most, I think it'd be I'm Gonna Miss You i was pretty sad when the scandal broke and they got torn apart, i hardly understood it at the time, i was 10 at the time they were basically broke kids and they were offered a lot of money and the chance for fame, etc. and then they became scapegoats and everyone dumped on them, had their grammy taken away, and eventually rob spiraled and ended up dying. i recently read a youtube comment to the effect of how they just did their thing in the wrong era. lipsyncing, autotune, etc. - not really a big deal today. ahead of their time, if you will. i do have to agree that i don't think this would really register as a terrible thing today, at least not nearly to the same degree. particularly if everyone involved were good with it going in what a bummer this all is. here's a recent video of fab performing blame it on the rain, he can clearly sing. i found this video quite heartening, like he's reclaiming this and owning it and bringing positivity. i really wish rob could be a part of it and know they are still loved by many, many people. i got love for everyone here, the front men, the actual singers, it's just good music and no one needed to get ripped up because of it i remember listening to it in my room, 1990, those sweet synths and beats, cool texture to the vocals, catchy melodies.. man, the whole world was exciting. this was the shit!! who else here enjoys the sonic stylings of Milli Vanilli? i love you Milli Vanilli!! i stand by it! these songs slap |

Weird - we do quizzes as a family at the moment, at the dinner table, and there was a question about Milli Vanilli today.
My husband and I explained it to our kids, and the 14 year old reacted how you’d expect, given the changes you mention - so what, doesn’t everyone do that? I wasn’t cool enough to listen to milli vanilli or pop radio. But I remember feeling sad then...and I remember the horrid punching-down glee of all the rich white kids at my school, laughing at them. |

My only memory of this was coming home from Washington state at the end of summer '89 after an extended visit with my father. Riding home from the airport in the car with my mother, she put in this tape and I was forever altered.
The world had changed while I was gone. I can draw a distinct separation between the two eras of my life: pre-Milli Vanilli and post-Milli Vanilli. |

It's a rare condition, this day and age,
to read any good news when you've been diagnosed with AIDS. Love and tradition of the grand design, some people with AIDS say it's even harder to find. Well then there must be some magic clue inside these gentle AIDS Cause all I see is a tower of AIDS TMNT pasta burstin' out of every seam. As days go by, we're gonna fill our house with AIDS. The moon may cry, we're gonna smother the AIDS with tenderness. When days go by, there's room for you, room for AIDS, for gentle hearts an opportunity. As days go by, it's the bigger AIDS of the family. |

I remember they performed on some awards ceremony and during the song they went to opposite ends of the stage, then ran at each other and did a flying body bump
They may have been trying to make this their signature move, as you can see a very abbreviated version of it toward the start of the "Girl You Know It's True" video At the time this was as cool as it was possible to get, in my eyes |

I also remember them guest starring as themselves on short-lived (but beloved by me at the time) sitcom "Sister Kate"
After the scandal broke, my first thought was that the people working on this show must have known the secret, because I was but a child and didn't know how tv works |
