There's definitely a big folk/country rock influence injected into their early "garage rock" sound which The Strokes didn't have. It is an exaggeration to say that M&S made the same music as KoL did, but there are similarities between the two, like there is between KoL and The Strokes. Their first two albums could have reached a lot more people initially if they were released in '09/'10 instead of '03/'04.

It calls into question why people call bands like M&S "hipster" at all, they're tremendously popular and part of the hipster ethos is obscurity. Usually it would be to make fun of them, but people also praise artists like Skrillex and fun* for being totally hipster.
