GATGC is incredible... during the spoken part I just love the piano... it's so creepy. ugh, it's pure perfection. Everything about this song is incredible, and I will never understand the hate for it. NEVER!

look, simple equation here:

1. virtually every sp song is perfect or at least miles better than anything by anyone else

2. people who post lists of "favourites" are always subject to change, so there's no point in making such arbitrary, unsubstantiated lists anyway

3. i've already as stated logical fact that the only qualifiers for the title of greatest composition are the epic songs, being of the same quality as any other song, but "greater" by virtue of being longer, more complicated and therefore more accomplished.

if you really wanna contend that any other songs are "better" you're gonna have to back it up, i want passionate outpourings of love and consideration for every little facet of that song, you hear me?? if you can't be bothered or haven't thought about it that much well don't post here

an objective list of the best songs doesn't mean only the "epics" qualify. those are your musical values. I think the more distilled, hard-hitting songs are the greatest.

also, sometimes the best songs appear out of nowhere. more time being spent does not mean the song is going to be better.

i don't necessarily mean how much a particular song has been agonized over, just how much preparation went into producing it

a shorter song could of course qualify for this, some short ones don't happen very easily, but generally speaking we know that billy is so prolific he probably doesn't struggle so much with the shorter songs. feel free to argue your case for such a song though.

generally speaking we know that Billy can't self-edit whatsoever and I don't think epics are any better than shorter songs.

thats nonsense. what exactly is it that one wishes he would edit from any song? the man is made of music and overwrought sentimentality, you can't take that away from him

I think taking away is harder for him than adding, considering he's making up riffs and lyrics in his sleep. it's just a different philosophy. sometimes the frills distract more than add.

either way, I think a good top 10 list would probably have a mix of many different types of songs as acoustic demos have something going for them that Thru the Eyes of Ruby never will, and vice versa.

that is true. i'd never discount the philosophy that less is sometimes more or that a certain song might have a more genius melody or something than another. but things like that are harder to gauge and this thread would turn into a comepletely different discussion

seeing as most people aren't willing to write in any depth about why they like a certain song, they'll just post lists or say X sucks and Y rules etc. its mindless, i'm just trying to encourage meaningful, passionate and hopefully intelligent discussion
