For me, it was a huge shock. I was a senior in high school, and the Pumpkins were the end-all-be-all of cool and greatness. They were infallible, man. I saw them as unstoppable. I remember listening on an old school Sony two-tape deck radio and sitting downstairs because I got clearer reception on the radio. Jaw dropped when he shared the announcement. Saw them that night in LA and it hung over the show like a cloud.

Have you even read Crime and Punishment? Notes From Underground? What about White Nights?

Of those three, just C&P. Loved it so much as a senior in high school that it prompted me to start this account on this website... that I still visit like 17 years later. I'm a psycho for that alone of Rodion levels.

Taking it you're a l33t Dostoyevsky fan?

Kinda. If you liked CP you should check out Notes. It isn't very lengthy and you will never forget it like 9-11.

"Like 1965-1972?" Isn't that the majority (if not all) of their relevant work? Yeah dude, I like the Beatles, but only a specific era: the stuff from 1964 to 1970.

I really didn't think so. Especially compared to when I saw them in 1996 and 1998.

Durrr comparing 2000 and 96 isn't possible but 2000 has some really cool elements like the reworked versions of Today etc. But Ghost is fucking beast!

Shocking isn't the right word. I was a teenager, so it was more crushing. But at that time everything in life was dramatic, and seemed to have so much meaning. So it fit right in that my favorite band was breaking up, along with crushes seeming epic, every new piece of art I liked being life-changing, etc. it seemed like life would be that angst-filled forever. When you're a dumbass teen who thinks the plastic bag in American Beauty is the meaning of life, everything just fits your view of yourself as a tortured soul destined to unrequited love.

There was an MTV interview and the person asked Melissa something along the lines of "are you just here for this tour or in it for the long haul" and she responded with a guilty look and a generic "one day a time" kind of answer.

That's when I knew something was up but it was still surprising because the band was still pretty popular.

96, 98, and 00 SP were 3 entirely different bands. In sound more than personnel.

Are you saying we shouldn't compare them and not hold 2000 SP to the same standard?

I saw them at the Hill Auditorium in 2000 and when we left someone in our group said, I guess they are done, that felt like a farewell. Hope we can see them again one more time. Bill announced their demise 2 weeks later.

Anyone saying they were sloppy on the Resume the pose tour are fucking high. Those shows were super tight and some of the heaviest shows they ever played.

Anyone recall the 5-23 clue in the Machina booklet, and then he announced it on May 23? Gah, those days of the Machina mystery bring back a bit of nostalgia.

I saw them several times on that last tour. He addressed a group of us hanging out in Greenville, SC before a show and told us it was over after their overseas tour. I believe this was a few weeks before the official announcement.

All over it. Probably could use a good book in my life now anyways, so thanks.

IDK, I saw them at Lowell 4/29/2000 less than a month before the announcement, and that was a pretty fucking great show.

Ramdust are you in any way related to Ram27? Maybe a second cousin or a niece?
