So "E" for effort Billy.
"best since" does not equal "as good as"

My condolences to anyone who thinks anything Billy has done since the breakup is better than anything Smashing Pumpkins did before the breakup.

the celestials is actually pretty damn good too

not sure if it's really great or i'm just so used to billy putting out shit that it just seems great in comparison.

either way it's much better than teargarden

this is pretty apt, yeah

there's complexity and depth that was missing from teargarden (and zeitgeist, to a lesser extent)

I'm resisting the urge to listen. The first time I hear the album I want it to be the whole thing, not low-quality samples.

I'm both intrigued and suspicious about the response so far. I'm pretty sure the feedback to Zeitgeist when it first came out was similar to this. Along the lines of "not bad", with comparisons to SD or MCIS. But then Zeitgeist as a rock album turned out to be the opposite of what SD and MCIS is.

how does this not suck?

comparing the first 3 tracks to the first 3 tracks of zeitgeist is really stunning if you think about it -- zeitgeist was horrible

not that this is Houses of the Holy or anything, but the first three songs are at least sorta solid

it doesn't compare to SD or MCIS but it's just a different animal than Zeitgeist re: depth

the last song is pretty beautiful...too bad the vocals are the most dry, nasal and strained on the whole album

God Mike's drum kit sounds like shit. His playing doesn't make it sound any better. Some of the music is decent, but fuck.

how can Billy work with the calibur of Jimmy for nearly 20 years and then record Oceania and say, "yeah, those drums are good to go. Print it!" ??? Its hard to conceive he still doesn't have that perfectionist gene left in any of his bones...

This is legitimately good. Not "good" by "2012 SP standards," but legitimately good. Had it had Jimmy drumming, this could be "really good." I'm extremely pleasantly surprised.

Well, I got it to work and am listening to Quasar right now.

The singing is... flat... not too energetic, but it's okay.
