The Cure last night

sadly, not that impressive =/

the show was wwaayyy too long and it felt long (roughly 3 hours). the new songs from the album, of which they probably played 6ish were not that memorable. I love the Cure, but I swear some of the songs they played sounded like songs they played earlier in the night... they just sort of ran together. The more obscure songs sounded pretty much the same. Their choice of songs for the encore(s) was bizzare.

they played most of the hit singles except for Friday I'm in Love, which I wanted to hear.

all in all, I would give them a 5/10 and that is being generous because they are the Cure after all.

actually, this was my first time in the re-modeled music hall and i didn't think it was bad persay, but i think they totally fucked the AC situation, I remember it used to always be nice and cold/cool there, but man it was hot as fuck and people were passing out...

although i think it would be cool as fuck to get there early and be at the very front of the 2nd floor balcony and get the best view in the house.

The more post-punk I listen to the more overated I feel The Cure are. Sure their brand of alternative "Goth" rock etc is pretty unique and they are a big influence on many bands but their is a LOT more good stuff from the era and The Cure seem to be so big... Must be their middle of the road approach that doesn't really offend or set people's opinions one way or the other immediately I guess (unless the first thing you hear is the more gloom based drudge stuff) pretty easy band to get into.

Saying that I am a cure fan. I don't really care about their newer stuff though. I think I listen to them less than any band from the era now, though I know some people who worship them (guy has seen them almost 100 times :S) who still like tons of stuff fom the era. I think they just lose their edge, become a bit transparent.

thought it was pretty rad. i'd never heard The Big Hand before, what a gem that is. yeah the new songs didn't impress, but oh well. Push, Torture, Deep Green Sea, all the Pornography stuff, and the encores were well worth the lulls. my only disappointment was the lack of any Bloodflowers.

I'm huge on Cure, and I love the "genre"...what other bands do you mean to invoke? I've heard a few other post-punk bands and few are even on the same level. Virgin Prunes seemed good for a go, and the album was just a big ripoff of Banshees and Colin Newman. Even Newman, I got A-Z, and although the influence on banshees/cure is obvious, I think they really improved on it, song-wise. Wire is good, but very bland to my ears. If the song isn't very strong, I can be swayed by a big sound with enough esthetic to keep my ears perked.
Television sounds just like a male Patti Smith. I love PS, but I just couldn't get over it. Does the guy start to use an original voice later on, after Marquee Moon?
I've just got Magazine's Real Life album and it's good so far, but I've only skimmed.
Any reccomendations?

Well the main thing with Post-punk is that it is a very diverse line of artists because it's pretty loose terminology. Im not even all over this genre and the luminaries yet but there just seems to be lots of great stuff around the time that people overlook. Some bands are just flat out amazing and it's just a wonder how they get/got little recognition compared to some of the bigger names like The Cure.

There is tons more rated stuff (obviously putting aside The Smiths, Joy Division who are pretty huge these days) I've barely listened to with much promise as well (Sisters of mercy, Swans, Jesus and mary chain, The Birthday Party, Gang of four, Magazine etc) and then who knows how many more obscure bands like And also the trees are out there. Pretty cool to work with a guy who was bootlegging all round the era

Fuck there are some great bands mentioned in this thread. The early PiL albums re-define awesome.
