Default Turn On The Bright Lights is rated as high as Nevermind on rateyourmusic.com

That means there are a lot of people out there who regard Interpol to be as talented and as brilliant as Nirvana. That blows my mind.

Interpol is very mockable, yes. But TOYBL is a great album, sorry to break it to you.

i enjoy TOTBL more than any nirvana record at this point in time, however comparing the two bands is of course ridiculous.

Their debut is so much better and different than the rest that I barely consider Interpol to have authored it

I'd rather listen to TOtBL for the rest of my life than hear another nirvana song again.

Interpol always reminded me of like a weird kind of Cake knockoff... The stupid disjointed speak-singy vocals. Interpols a 1-trick pony

no it doesn't
totbl is a really good album
nevermind has the historical relevance behind it or whatever, i guess, but it's hardly even their best

i pretty much agree w the sentiment that i'm gonna grab totbl sooner than most nirvana these days, anyway

tho i did enjoy the hell out of bleach the other day, so who knows! (or cares)

you crazy for this one, c!

Yes, but it's a very good trick, at least for awhile at the beginning. I love totbl, it really is a great album and a classic at this point. I'm not sure if Stella could ever get old.

however, IMHO, when you strip away the annoying bullshit from both bands, Nirvana put out a lot more good music. Nevermind is not cool to like as you can witness anytime the band is mentioned and everyone clamors to mention anything but Nevermind, but even that is a great pop album even if the songs are beyond overplayed.

my buddy used to refer to Radiohead as "depressing Cake" every time I put them on. I've never heard Cake and can't comment on the appropriateness of the comparison.

i remember the first time i heard of Interpol was on here before the first record French Lover Sebastien talking about the EP and claimed they were gonna be the next huge band which prompted me to dl songs. Turns out he wasn't quite right. I actually didn't like the band at first because it sounded too much like a rip off of two or three bands i loved. I still think half those lyrics on TOTBL aren't so good. It could have been so much more with a great lyricist

Nirvanas a great band, but people just get tired of this legendary mythology that is built around them. I think it's dumb to let that shit cloud your opinion. They're pretty much just a great, loud punk band

one of the few times I agree with you. they've basically become a cultural meme at this point, like wearing the nirvana smiley shirt is cool for kids who don't even know who the band is.

but underneath all the bullshit hype is a good, simple rock band with a pretty nice deck of good tunes

I mean that's not super accurate but it's pretty funny. One of my friends once referred to Paranoid Android as "Come On Eileen for intellectuals" which made my laugh pretty hard.

Yeah and also, anytime something is culturally groundbreaking- it'll be built upon endless times in the future to the point where years down the road people say: "I don't get the hype, it's really not that good"

I was talking with a young movie buff who had no idea why I and so many others appreciate A Clockwork Orange, and they're just not realizing the fucking thing was released in 1971 or whenever.

That's... That actually totally on the money and pretty insightful Fuzz. Someone told me once that "genre is just an idea so good that everybody has to try to find out what it would be like if they had thought of it first"

It's the nature of the beast. No one today turns on Sabbath and thinks "holy shit! I can't believe how heavy this is!" but back in the day that had to have been as intense and heavy as it got, it's why a lot of people still consider Black Sabbath as heavy metal.

well a lot of people discredit Nirvana because they rehashed 10 other bands to get their sound.

this might be true, but I think this is the case with almost all music, which in general is a lot more derivative than people like to think with their "music is the pure beautiful outpouring of the soul with unicorns splashing through it" mentality... but I've already shit on that here recently. Like rock music fans tend to deify someone like The Who, who had such a profound impact and put out so much good music. But on the other side, there are people who think Pete Townshend just ripped off Link Wray and spent his whole career cashing in on that.
