As long as Nicole doesn't play any of her own basslines, I'm game.

I never had a problem with Nicole on bass, just Mike's drums.

Same; Mikey "drum lessons on skype" Byrne sucked but Nicole was great. Good bass player, gorgeous, came across well on social media, all that shit. The problem was Billy wouldn't let her do her Cold and Lovely stuff with her wife, which is bullshit when you consider all the side stuff he's done.

Billy being hypocritical, huh, imagine that

Mikey wasn't that bad. Literally 90% of drummer couldn't do half the things he could. He did well considering Jimmy is one of the greatest drummers ever.

He certainly wasn't technically bad, he was just the wrong fit for the band. Same as Jeff

I should probably rephrase, when I say Mike sucked I don't particularly think it was his fault. Wrong fit, not enough experience for long tours, just came across as an awkward youngster in the right place at the wrong time. Which is what he was.

He always sounded like he was trying to "keep up" with what Jimmy would be playing, so whether he technically sucks or was just the wrong fit, it came off poorly.

I never had an issue with Nicole's playing, but just to be totally honest, we all know the bass is significantly less important to the vast majority of SP songs than the other instruments.

in fairness Billy's singing was as detrimental to the music as Mike's drumming during that period

Corgan admitted in an interview that he was encouraging Byrne to mimic Chamberlin.

ATTN: INTERNET. I HAVE CHANGED MY OPINION ON MIKE BYRNE.

I have come to the conclusion that Mike is a great drummer, he just sucked at playing 90s alternative rock.

Yep.

Fuck, he was 19 when he joined. No way in hell I could handle a world tour with Billy Corgan when I was 19. Not even drumming wise, but just 'being a person'-wise

Mike Byrne IS a great drummer, and he was fine on Oceania and the Teargarden songs (Lightning Strikes especially), but his 'feel' on the older Pumpkins songs just felt a bit wrong, always felt a bit too heavy handed vs flowing and dynamic like Jimmy (and Matt Walker) would handle them

Why does no one shit on Brad Wilk playing the old stuff? Brad is a solid 'power house' type drummer... which kind of dumbed down the songs he played on cause he kept it pretty fuckin' basic. To me, he's a pretty boring live drummer. Stand Inside Your Love on that tour was so flat because of him, he was such an odd choice.

I think by that time no one cared anymore, but I agree, Brad Wilk was a weird choice.

Hey man, I totally agree with this

The SP style was just over Byrnes head, but I bet if he had the freedom to play the kinda stuff he liked he'd be a good drummer. He sounded a lot better in the 2 Bearcubbing songs I listened to once.

As a big fan of Rage, I definitely thought he sounded like shit on that tour too... But as someone mentioned, most people stopped caring by then.

congrats on Mike playing music he wants to play and clearly enjoying it. imagine how miserable he must have been playing with Billy. I'm sure he took all the joy out of playing and I'm sure Mike was intimidated by how authoritarian Billy is with his bandmates.

the reunion of these three without d'arcy is like the band when they called it quits in 2000. Now picking up where they left off in 2000.
there's some mythos to the situation, lets see if billy tries to use it.

This would only work without Jeff. You can't lose the SP2 sound without getting rid of him.

Billy must hate Melissa auf der Maur nowadays.
She would have been the best legacy of a still classic lineup without D'arcy...

Here's a bass player that would perfectly match Billy Corgan's cultural ambitions, with a strong stage presence:

Melissa would be great. Great stage presence.

I think Jeff is gonna be there purely to augment the sound Billy and James are making - if they are going for that "shoegaze" sound with the 3 guitars, then they could do pretty well with that. So, while two are playing rhythm, when it goes to the solo we don't lose any of the tonality as the third player is there to play the solo.

I see the solos being split evenly between Billy, James, and Jeff. With perhaps less Jeff and more the other two.
