Default Why Does Father John Misty Suck Donkey Dicks?

I was listening to a SiriusXMU special with him today and he fucking sucks. Every song is full of strident, cringe-worthy lyrics and you can tell that he thinks he's really clever. But the songs are just meandering spoken word (bad) poetry over slow, boring music.

It sounds to me that he tries to make every song that he writes sound like God by John Lennon. Like we're supposed to be blown away by his insight into life and the human condition.

I can understand why Poots hates him though, because he's an outspoken anti-fascist and anti-neoliberal

Not sure I fully buy the irony/self-parody angle.

If it's supposed to be "a joke" doesn't that make it disingenuous? Honest question, I'm not trying to be a hater.

It makes me think of "ironic" comedians like Dice or Nick Mullen who have been crucified for their "beliefs".

I saw a live stuidio performance of FJM once that was pretty good in a Steely Dan sort of way.

I mean if you look at this thread you will see the criticism is mostly about "the way he looks"

He is a really talented musician, great singer and gifted songwriter. I loved him in Fleet Foxes too. I think Father John Misty started as a reaction to the way people would construct an identity for him because he was in a really popular "hip" band. I don't really give a shit about the persona part of it, he's written a lot of music which has resonated with me, often because of his willingness to lyrically take big chances and sing about things other people just don't really want to touch in guitar music.

He definitely has some kind of who am I complex. He grew up in a crazy Christian household where he wasn't allowed to listen to music

also lots of musicians have personas I don't think that means the music is "disingenuous"

i understand the lyrical content is juxtaposed against the adorable vocals and cloying renaissance fair arrangements which just makes it even more precious. like if colin melloy ever listened to dark lyrics instead of fondly remembering the library sing-a-longs of his youth

No, if you read the thread it is about how his lyrics are fucking overly sentimental shit and his melodies and music are boring resulting in an overall product that is pablum. The way he looks was just the icing on the cake. I didn't even know he was in Fleet Foxes but that explains a lot. Like how much he sucks donkey dick in the same way they do.

There is a good reason nobody has written about the "things that other people just don't want to touch in guitar music" because it fucking sucks and every other songwriter found that out and didn't do it.

Father John Misty is everything that is wrong in bullshit indie music, a genre that already has fuck-all going for it but he drove a wooden stake right through its heart. He fucking sucks at lyrics, music, and melody. An all around piece of turd with a piano.

I didn't even know he was in Fleet Foxes. Still going with the Steely Dan comparison, where the lyrics are so acerbic and biting compared to the feel-good vibes of the music.

Not sure if FJM does that but the little that I've seen and resonated with reminded me of that. I've also seen a lot of stuff that sucked.

not sure what you're talking about?

'honeybear' was (or at least sounded like) a very personal record. he's also said, if i recall that quote correctly, that he wrote that record after a year in which he engaged in 'all sorts of regrettable behavior'. it's not like he's being tongue in cheek.

tbh i get the douche allegations, with him writing songs about fending off aggressive women throwing their panties at him at shows. but i don't hate him. i think at his best he can be really sharp, incisive and original (The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apt) and at his worst it's just not very profound ramblings from the diary of a hipster set against plinky indie tinted music.

yes he's interesting because he's contradictory. he can be very sentimental and sincere and then in the next verse be incredibly jaded and ironic. He makes fun of hipsters but he is ostensibly a huge hipster. It's hard to tell where the real him ends and the character begins, but he's definitely playing a part to some degree.
