Default Billy Corgan on Donald Trump

From Rollingstone.com:

Billy Corgan on Donald Trump: He's 'Running Chaos Theory'

"It's like the music business: everybody gets controlled, and somebody comes along that fucks it all up," rocker says of Republican frontrunner

By Daniel Kreps September 4, 2015

Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan may not agree with Donald Trump's political agenda, but he does credit the Republican frontrunner with bringing a level of entertainment and uncertainty to what's usually a monotonous road to Election Day.

During a Q&A with fans before a Cincinnati concert earlier this month, Corgan was asked what he thought about the first Republican debate, at which point the rocker lauded the mogul's ability to take the political spectrum and "fuck it up." "I think what's cool, and I'm not saying I agree politically, but I think what's cool is Trump's running chaos theory," Corgan said (via Alternative Nation).

"He's forcing a lot of things out into the open, so they can't control this, whatever that control is," Corgan continued. "It's like the music business: everybody gets controlled, and somebody comes along that fucks it all up. So I think it's good that he's fucking it up, because whether or not he's the guy, obviously the political class doesn't want him there, it'll open it up to a bigger dialogue."

Corgan then admitted that politics, like rock and roll, can become stagnant, but Trump, who is more celebrity than politician, has livened up the election process. "Whether anybody agrees or not, the rating on that debate was 24 million. It was eight times higher than the first Republican debate of the last cycle. It was highest non-sports related cable rating of all time. That means people are engaged," Corgan added. "I would argue at this point is there any difference between politics and entertainment?"

If Corgan plays his cards right, he might emerge as a vice presidential favorite on Kanye West's 2020 campaign.

that's not what chaos theory is

i really feel like bill is basically implicitly endorsing the republican candidate for president that shall not be named but knowing that would be suicide he talks around it

i don't like this one bit

I guess I don't value entertainment in politics enough to be genuinely amused that a rich guy with lots of power is becoming a serious contender for a position of power and says very stupid stuff.

I guess I do like seeing how the Republican's base reacts to Trump, though. A lot of what he says is pretty much just more explicit formulations of what has been right-wing rhetoric for years; but other Republicans, who like to couch their reactionism in benign language, have to suddenly pretend that they are appalled by misogyny and racism and military imperialism and jump around him.

And Corgan is kind of on to something (probably by accident) about Trump not fitting neatly into the mainstream political spectrum that the Dems and Reps represent. He's a populist conservative, so a lot of his rhetoric plays into right-wing fears of outsiders such as immigrants and competitive nations, but a lot of it is also against corporate welfare, which is usually the left's rallying point (the right doesn't like to draw too much attention to the policy favours they do for "job creators"). And he's also for single-payer healthcare.

It's also odd that, despite diverging wildly from right-wing libertarians, he's taking a lot of Tea Party support. Probably because they are low-info voters and extreme right-wing sentiments that flatter their vague sensibilities were always a larger factor in how they vote than actual policy.

I guess at the end of the day, I'm not too upset that the Republican Party is being so fractured by the lunatics they originally courted for strategic reasons that they are moving farther away from being a serious option for government. If only a grassroots element became a force in the Democrat Party so that it could actually be a left-wing party, though.

I like how I began this post by saying that I wasn't amused but then realized that I kinda am

Does anyone else get the feeling that billy copies and pastes things he's read or heard people say, directly into a conversation without referencing a source, as though he just came up with it himself.

Well, I don't think he could ever be president, of course. But doesn't he have a shot at winning the Republican nomination? I haven't been following American electoral politics too closely, but from what I hear, the pollsters keep saying that his support is going to dwindle out any minute now but it keeps not happening.

I wouldn't mind if he won the nomination, because he doesn't have a chance in a general election. I also don't mind if he runs as an independent and splits the vote.

no, he doesn't. fox news has a hatchet for him, i mean i don't know why people think a guy who's leading in one or two primaries at 30-35% of the vote is a "serious candidate"

You got any thoughts on the lawless contender on the other side. The one suppressing DNC debates that has the other two main candidates crying foul that the democratic process is being railroaded. You know, that woman whose staffers laugh and brag about violating election law and with a lawyer who says, "whatever you can get away with, just do it."

Having already received notice from Neil Young’s management after he used Rockin’ In The Free World, Trump was told to “go fuck himself” by R.E.M earlier this year and even his reported friend, Steve Tyler, requested that he not use Aerosmith’s Dream On as part of his campaign. Other musicians who are unhappy to be associated with Trump also ******* Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan and Speedy Ortiz.

Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan may not agree with Adolf Hitler's political agenda, but he does credit the German National Socialist frontrunner with bringing a level of entertainment and uncertainty to what was usually a monotonous road to the 21st century.
