During our upcoming world tour, we’ll be playing an ‘Oceania Suite’ in our set along with other SP favorites

Compass: How do you come up with set lists for a show?

B.C.: That’s another sort of changing thing. In the beginning, we had no set list. And then it kinda got to, “Well, these songs go better here and these songs go better here.” These days, it’s very much that we play the same set every night. The thing we found with the modern audience is there just isn’t the patience anymore for the —let’s call it —jamming out. Where shows used to be more random and anything can happen, I look at it as I’ve got a very short window of time to make a fan and keep a fan. It’s our responsibility to maximize that opportunity.

Compass: Is it safe to say you play the old school hits like “Today” and “1979”?

B.C.: No. It’s not. In fact, in this current set list, we’re not playing either song. It depends. Sometimes for festival shows we’ll play those songs, but for the set that we have for solo shows we’re not playing those songs. I don’t look at it like I have to play these songs to get people to come. I think they come if they believe in what we’re doing.

Right, setlists have been a huge surprise in their career until THESE DAYS. What a joke.

For those attending one of the shows - the spfc tour history archive is always looking for pictures of:

- tour posters for specific shows that list SP with the venue/date
- ticket stubs
- a setlist

If you can provide any of it, please share. Thanks.

Interview with Billy:
http://www.scmp.com/magazines/48hrs/...3909/look-east

Quote:
[Ö]But why dredge up the past, many critics wondered. Few bands have such staying power; but even when given the chance, how many would want to continue playing their adolescent anthems of the past? Even Corgan sounds unsure. "If I'm standing there, and my life is reduced to playing 'rat in a cage'," he says in a reference to the famed Pumpkins single Bullet with Butterfly Wings, "for someone like me that's going to cause an existential crisis. Think about this -I'm singing this song that [someone] wants to hear about how I'm trapped in the paradigm of expectation, and that's the expectation to continue playing that song."

Corgan also acknowledges that today's audiences are different from those in the 1990s. "When I step onstage in Hong Kong, I will assume that 85 to 95 per cent of the audience knows about five per cent of the material. They're only gonna know the top 10 to 15 songs. "That puts me in a very difficult situation, because you're there to play, obviously you're there to entertain; but to make an artistic statement going off the grid, knowing that they only know 10 to 15 songs, you're going to basically have an audience that might as well be listening to a band they have never heard of," he says.

Interview with Billy
http://politiken.dk/ibyen/nyheder/mu...pkins-i-graven

excerpt
Quote:
What I'm thinking right now itís the end of an epoch. We've almost finished touring with 'Oceania', and then I find something new. For right now, I think rock has lost its vigor, and I no longer feel I am part of it. There is virtually no rock bands that develop as the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin did. And the public has lost the desire to try something new. So fighting in that world is a waste of time to me.

Maybe I should start playing for a small audience, but at a higher price. Give them an experience that is 10 times as strong as what people get now. Or maybe I'll have to stop touring because I canít afford it. Maybe I'll settle for five concerts a year. In any case, I think you have to get out of this treadmill. Where you use a year to make an album, release it, wait for the judgment of the reviewers, Twitter and Facebook, and then go on tour to promote the record. I think that's over. At least for me.

Are you saying that you are considering not to tour?

I think about it every day. For it is a matter of priorities. How important it is to be home with the dogs, being on vacation, to be in the studio. And I've been on tour more than any other in the last 25 years. Right now I live in the same hotel where I was 16 months ago. It's crazy to think about. It feels endless. So maybe it's time to get out of it and create something new.

We recently played at a festival where I looked at the program for all three days and saw that I had soldmore records than all the other bands combined. And yet I was not headlining. So what do I do then? Why I stand there and try to prove something, I have already proven?

When I started The Smashing Pumpkins in 1988, I didnít think I would sell a lot of records. It was just to get a reaction from the friend who sat and listened. My world was that small. And maybe it's time to pull me into a world that is smaller, but more dangerous. Because if you create something with great force and integrity, then perhaps the world comes looking for you. And I have shown that I can do that.

You started your own tea house in Chicago and have entered the wrestling industry. What role do you think music will play in your life now?

Frankly, I do not know anymore. I do not know. The last seven years have been very intense, so maybe I need to stop. Put me under a tree and just listen. I have tried before, and then I heard something that grew into something big. So today, I know that it's not just a fantasy. Maybe I hear church bells, perhaps I hear no new music. Maybe I should listen to God for seven more years before he gives me a new song. But I think I have to get out of this, because it feels a bit like being in a relationship with someone who says she does not love you anymore. How[?] do I feel a bit of rock 'n' roll.

Interview with Jeff
http://musicweekly.asia/culture/the-...-ocean-in-2013

excerpt
Quote:

And ďOceaniaĒ seemed to be an album that people either loved or hatedÖ.

There are some people who think if itís not the old band they wonít accept it. I think itís more their problem. Weíre just doing our best to write music thatís relevant to 2013. Itís not 1992 or 1996. Weíre making music for the present. Music has changed. Thatís not on my shoulders.

As a guitarist, youíre called ďThe ShredderĒ. How is it working with Billy (Corgan) and do you have fun in the studio?

I donít think making records is that fun. Itís a lot of hard work. For the band in general, the recording studio is taken very seriously. A better way to describe it is a prolonged intensity. Iíve never had a chance to take that much time to make an album. Seven days a week, 12 hours a day, working at a super high level to play really tough parts. You have to keep your mind focused. But thatís what making good records is about. You have to reach their levels of intensity. It takes a lot of struggle and searching to get there.

Itís about things in you that you didnít know you had. I think Billy was actually pretty helpful. He gave me my space. He would produce the album and say he didnít like a part, but he gave me plenty of time to do my thing. A lot of times he wasnít even in the room. ot of times he wasnít even in the room. He wouldnít hover over me either.

I think as a guitar player you respect that. He was very respectful of all of us. He wanted us there and believed we could do it.

With so many of the bandís past albums coming out via reissues and a new live DVD coming out, what do you want to say about each?

Utís really cool because Iím living in Chicago now. We have a studio up there and thereís basically a full time staff going through all the archives. So, Iíve had an opportunity to hear things that arenít even on the re-issues. When I look back and see it, and Iíve heard everything from 4-track tapes when Billy was 16 to Adoreójust the magnitude of music thatís been createdóitís just unbelievable.

I donít think people have can possibly realize how much music Billy has written and how hard heís worked. Itís insane. Itís really inspiring. Iíve gotten to hear and see things that have blown my mind. Thatís exciting!

Billyís worked really hard at finding things that people want to hear. He asks my opinion as well. Iíve had a chance to participate in that way. The reissues are done really well. Another thing people donít realize is that there are months and months of work for every reissue.

Are you all getting along?
Thatís the one strange thing. We get along really well. Itís a maturity thing. Between Billy and me and Nicole, that type of daily drama that bands have just isnít exciting. We really respect each other on that level. Thatís not to say that itís always great. I can argue in a healthy wayÖbut most of those arguments have to do with the music and the band and we walk out of the room as friends. I really canít say anything bad about anybody.

Are you working on a new album?
We have to start the process of a new album. Doing something as good as Oceania wonít cut it. It has to be exponentially better. We might be in the studio for five years. Weíre in no hurry.

I like the birds, too. And Farm. They have a lot of great artwork in general, both for tour posters and album covers.
