Question: "So many people want to take your songs and use them for commercial reasons...advertisements...you know...some call it 'selling out'. Elaborate on why you choose not to do this?"

what the fuck does "sell out" even mean anymore? This is the band that 20 years ago set out to be "the biggest band in the world." in alt/punk terms THAT is selling out.

isn't it supposed to mean compromising your art for the sake of financial reward? If the music is 20 years old, is it selling out to license it?

It's been disappointing to see an artist I looked up to as a teenager exhibiting all that lame, cliched, petty behavior. Attention seeking, greed, childish name calling, a laughably out of control need to brag about past accomplishments.

In the context of Billy Corgan, 'selling out' means either abandoning your principles or being a fake from the get-go.

God, it's embarrassing that any artist is insecure enough that they have to deny that they will ever "sell out". Just do whatever the fuck you want, it's your words and your music that you created to express yourself. If anyone gets upset about how you choose to use the music that you create, they're too obsessed and emotionally invested in you anyway.

it's always fucking lame when an artist allows someone to co-opt their work to sell a product in exchange for money. it's embarassing to see SP songs in commercials

It just seems so strange to me that "I will never fucking sell out" got one of the biggest cheers in that little speech. I'd be really creeped out if I was in that audience.

Yes, it is precisely that Billy on so many occasions in the past has made a point of expressing his disdain for "selling out" that makes this rather unpalatable and jarring. But I do think Scotty is correct in the sense that writing songs and then letting them be used in commercials after the fact is different than writing songs expressly for commercials.

nah, it was a throwaway. it would never have seen the light of day otherwise (with the possible future exception of a Zeitgeist bonus disc - gulp!) so it was a shrewd move from corgan (itself something of a rarity) to accept cash for something essentially worthless.

Sure, the multiple, just-slightly-different releases of the same album was an obvious cash-grab, but things like that are almost always contrived by the record company themselves in order to profit or at least re-coup the cost of advances to the band for studio production, tours, promotional efforts, etc. I'm sure the record company calls and is like, "you got a couple of extra songs there, because we were thinking...?" and then the band is like "Um...ok. We do have a couple demos we had worked on....".
