Jack is the final sausage in the sausage fest, which is about two sausages too many at this point.

This. Also James Iha hasn't posted shit about this on his social media (instagram). He did, however, promote a recent APC single there, even though he doesn't even play on it. This is either a money thing or a favour to Billy and Jimmy. He'll do the bare minimum and continue doing things he actually has passion for afterwards.

He's not very active on instagram. He did promote the reunion on his twitter tho.

Do you all agree that the cover of spin is bigger than a feature in the New York Times?

I think that needs some reassessing.

This band is so far from being about technical proficiency it’s a joke though. Even in their hey day (let’s say 94-96), Billy’s voice was constantly blown out and his vocal tonation was bad, his solos were a sloppy mess (check out “Geek USA” in Vieuphoria, he’s literally just playing a bunch of random notes), James’ bends were always sharp (listen to the electric version of “Disarm” on Vieuphoria for a particularly nauseating example), etc.

As far as bass playing goes even on the records you barely hear the bass due to the guitars eating up so much sonic space. The bass parts sound hard low-passed at about 200k which means you don’t really need to even play in time to sound good. So really it shouldn’t matter who is technically the better bassist. And honestly having a bassist who looks like a fat 8th grader (just like Mike Byrne) on stage just shows how dumb and out of touch Billy is. It just reflects very poorly on him, and is exemplary of his poor judgment and total inability to understand how to be cool and likeable and do anything ever that resembles good PR. Jack is not even a real professional musician. He has toured with his dad and done nothing else noteworthy in the music business. What the hell is billy thinking seriously ?? He just has a hard on for Bates because of the Joy Division connection. Give me a break.

By the way my swipes at the musicianship of SP in performance situations are a little heavy handed but I also just think that the bands strength and power has NEVER been musicianship. It has been intention, and the interpersonal chemistry of the original four. Billy has even said as much in interviews over the years..

Gimme a break, I'm Canadian. Who in the heavens even reads newspapers anymore anyways? They'd be better off doing something with Rolling Stone or Spin. No one reads NY Times to read about old grunge bands.

Subscription revenue for the Times was over $1 billion in 2017.

Spins current circulation is 469,000.

Subscription rates for the times vary but rough math gives me an estimate of like 4.2 million subscribers. So. Also I hit the nyt paywall every month and I’m sure many others do.

It's set to be on some sort of new release from the alternative rock band, which could be a new album or set of EPs.
The writer of the article didn't pay attention. Billy already said that it's gonna be released as two EPs.

the interview with James and Billy was a bit much

Quote:
“It’s.. well.. “, Iha begins, “it’s quite good and I think people will..”

He doesn’t get to say much before Billy Corgan, the bands leader and only constant member, interrupts him.

“I think what James is trying to say here - and I know he’s talking for the whole band and for everyone who’s heard the new material - the new pieces I’ve composed.. they’re absolutely groundbreaking and represent a paradigm shift not just for The Smashing Pumpkins and not just for rock music. If you want to talk about important events in history then there’s the birth of christ, the birth of William Patrick Corgan and the release of my.. our new EPs. I sent them to one of my friends and she called me in tears to tell me that they’d changed her life forever”.

Iha nods and says with perfect timing and an impeccable deadpan delivery worthy of TVs The Office - “Yes that’s exactly what I was going to say”. Corgan, not known for his modesty or sense of humor, leans back in his chair and smiles “See, it’s just as I said. This is very special music by a very special and gifted musician”. I realize he’s not in on the joke.

I ask James what it was like to be back in the studio with Billy and Jimmy (Chamberlin, the bands original drummer). Predictably, Corgan answers for him.

“James wasn’t really in the studio for this one. I don’t know if you know this but as well as being a word class singer, writer, poet, entrepreneur, father and businessman I’m also the finest guitarist of my generation. There isn’t really any point in having other guitarists in the studio with me”.

Further attempts at bringing Iha into the conversation are met with the same sort of response.

How are your family James? “His family are ok but not as good as mine”. What did you dream about last night James? “The same thing anyone dreams about - being William Patrick Corgan.” I try and come up with something that only Iha can answer, something that will shut Corgan up..and then it hits me:

“Does he hit you?”

Iha stays quiet while Corgan laughs.

“You’re funny, you’re real funny. Really fucking funny. Maybe you should be a comedienne? In fact I think you should because your career as a journalist is not going anywhere. I can guarantee that. I promise you. I make the call and you’re finished, you’ll never work again in this town again.”

Finally, something from Iha. A faint chuckle and “Did you really just say she’ll never work in this town again? Seriously?”.

“You can shut the fuck up James Iha. You’re lucky that you got it in the contract this time around or you’d be getting a fat lip from yours truly right now”
