they didn't do much evolving since the early 90's ... it's solid still ...

i dont see 'new you' as being similar to anything else in mbv's catalogue. for one, its way, way more harmonically complex, second, theres a lightness to the production thats atypical for MBV. maybe 'dont ask why' is in a similar ballpark presentation wise, but that doesn't account for the fact that new you is almost...bear with me, funky. yeah. funky. structurally you could maybe get away with comparing it to 'i only said', but doing so is to dismiss what makes it interesting.

the bind that holds 4-6 together is that lightness of touch coupled with the jazzy chords. theres a smokiness to 'if i am', but its still comparably clean; compare that to 'only tomorrow' or any of the first three. they carry the hallmarks of the MBV loveless sound, (but with a wider harmonic palate), chief among them: distortion.

1-3: loveless with more chords.
4-6: a cleaner, poppier, jazzier MBV.
7-9: mind fuck.
I agree with this.

For me the mind fuck section sounds completely rushed and unfinished. Even the production sounds different from the rest of the album.

I've only listened to it 3 times but I'm not getting that excited urgency to listen again. Both Isn't Anything & Loveless blew me away first listen, There was a lot to take in but it was damn exciting on repeat listens.

Like other posters said, I expected more evolution and this album will not stand the test of time.

I like this album a lot but it sounds like Loveless B-sides. Still, best 90s band reunion. Gotta give them credit for bringing back their traditional sound. Something SP couldn't do.

I do love the first three songs for sounding like Loveless. Only Tomorrow rocks. But New You is delicious.

i think its a transitional record for them. as far as whether it will stand the test of time, who's to say. if nothing else, its release is kind of a watershed moment. none of the songs are bad so it certainly wont be remembered as a failure.

this really does sound like three trios of songs rather than an "album"

it's still damn great

surprised by how raw (you know, relatively speaking) the guitars sound on a track like "only tomorrow", but also how the whole-chord pitch-dive trick still sounds original and distinctive over 20 years after loveless

I'm glad it doesn't sound as straight-forward as Isn't Anything and it's also not a Loveless rip-off. It reminded me of The Breeders in their last two records when they sounded more obscure, older but still based on relevant musical ideas. Even not being THE perfect album, it's still a pretty essential record and superior to most of the recent music I've been listening to.

regarding song trios, well mr. shields has always been more keen in making mini-records. make 'em short.

pretty sure "if this and yes" is a tape dub of a piece from final fantasy viii with some vocals recorded over the top

a TRANSITIONAL record. you know, an album clearly marking the transition between the sounds of its predecessor of 22 years earlier and the followup that will be released early 2048.

basically every song is good but the song order could be better..only tomorrow would be a much better starter. The whole thing was done pretty hasted though, they haven't even finished the artwork for the vinyl and CD when they were selling them, who else does that?
