He’s botched pretty much every single reissue from the start. So really no surprise. The Gish, SD, and MCIS ones could have had so much more content as far as demos and live stuff. The Adore box was probably the best one.

It would be cool to have one of the owners of the 25 copies lend their copy to be re-ripped using the tools of today. Lot of incredible sounding vinyl rips out there these days

I feel Billy has to be directly addressing Netphoria at this point between the "vocals up" in the Machina mixes and his recent mention of "announcing an announcement."

For credit to Billy where it's due, the label controls all of the masters, and are known for doing an absolutely miserable job maintaining them (see that major fire from 2008 that destroyed priceless masters from Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, and R.E.M. among others). As someone else in here pointed out, the idea of artists owning their masters remains an extremely new concept, relatively speaking. As a matter of fact, I have to give Billy props for managing to get the masters back for Zwan, TFE, and Zeitgiest; an extremely forward thinking move on his part.

As yet another person here pointed out, these masters are often hidden in archives/vaults/libraries which are seldom accessed, poorly filed, and improperly stored. Additionally, the "missing tapes" issue has not been specific to Machina. Billy mentioned it being a problem with all of the past reissues. I think we're just getting a better sense of it now because he has kept fans more "in the loop" with this reissue.

To make an example, I remember an interview Billy did for the Gish/SD reissues in 2011 where he mentioned trying to find the master tapes for "Drown." The label looked up and down for them, and could not locate them. Fortunately, someone had the sense to think of looking under "Corgan" in the archives instead of "smashing Pumpkins" and located them. In this instance, the filing mistake was minor and could be logically solved, but there are thousands of tapes which can essentially be lost to time because they were misfiled in a completely illogical way, and would never be found unless an entire inventory was conducted.

Ok so what reels and master -aren't- lost? Just scrap the whole project at this point. Make arrangements with Virgin and see if they'll let someone of your choosing transfer them the dolby SR way you want. Why on earth is he not doing this??

So Real Love’s masters are missing too? And all he found was a “slightly” clearer mix? So that just flushed all hopes down the toilet of that song being cleaned up so that you can actually hear what the hell he’s singing through all that treble jacked fuzz.

it seemed to me like he was putting in the effort on all the previous reissues to get them right. this one seems like he's just rushing through it, as others said, not even taking the time to get the proper source material or even attempting to.. we've waited so long, i'd rather wait a bit longer and have it done with the same level of care and attention that the other reissues had
