That's cool. I'd like to see that counter with DVD cases AND pizzas!

Now I can't remember if I had already posted about how my local independent would conveniently ignore the age restrictions on rentals, the last time this topic came up.

Only once was a recent hire given pause enough that he phoned my parents. After receiving the somewhat bemused all-clear to add The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or whatever it was to our youthful basket, he shook his head in a display of immense shame, vowing, "Okay, that's the last time I ever do that."

I don't know why everyone is referring to video stores in the past tense, I just rented out a couple of DVDs from our local video store 2 days ago. Our store even has a drive-thru! I've honestly never downloaded a movie in my life, but then again I wouldn't know how to.

Say what you will about storing movies as digital files, but it sure beats playing the shelf life game with formerly blank discs.

That is quite awesome indeed!

There's like no record stores around me at all. Closet one is probably like a 50 minute drive away. They even closed down all of the HMV's.

There are quite a few movies that I can't find in any video stores or dvd shops. And i don't have any friends to download stuff for me, and none of my family is tech savvy either. So yeah how does it work? I don't really have a home internet connection so I'll have to use library WiFi. How long do movies take to download? What is the website where you can download movies in good quality?

To me, the raddest part about it was getting access to unreleased films, some months before they were actually out.
3 months? That is kind of short. The dude wouldn't extend you once the 3 months were up?

I thought the coolest perk was just all the free rentals. I think it was something like 7 free a week. Pretty bitchin'. I guess the idea is that they want you watch a lot so you're able to gab about em with the customers.

I sort of feel bad for the young kids of this generation. Less cool places to work.

ahhh you're one of those guys? Sure, the ma and pa places have their own unique quality and personally, one of those was the closet proximity to where I lived growing up so I visited it the most... But I've always dug the glitz and glamor of a Blockbuster. Was a more sensational establishment to visit. It was cool that they had the video game booths too since I was usually behind on the top new games.

I played Mario Kart 64 for the first time at a Blockbuster. Monumental moment in ones life.

Yeah I think I've searched before... Just the usual releases. They have Zwan, The Future Embrace and the Singles soundtrack on CD too.

What sort of obscure stuff did you find through yours?

Your probably best bet is to download BitTorrent and just search for the movie you want with torrent at the end. Though I'm sure there's specific sites you can sign up for that have easier access, but if you're lazy like me, this usually works fine.

I think I might make a thread based on one naive mans quest to download a movie for the first time in his life this week. I'm going to guess there'll be alot of "access denied" from the local library computer. Also, I remember a friend of mine, from 9 years ago, downloading Rabid Grannies, and he said something about "seeds" and how that affected downloading/torrents. I didn't really understand and have just been hiding in video stores ever since.

Talk of seeds is what threw me, too. Only have I recently barely even begun to have dabbled in torrential plunder

But in all seriousness, I only use the internet for a bit of facebook, a bit of netphoria and a bit of porn, so we shall see how a complete internet twat goes with downloading a movie, a skill any guy should've mastered by the time they're 16..

But as for legitimate video store nostalgia, holy shit.. Even though I still rent out movies on a somewhat regular basis, I remember when I was 15/16 (2008) when I really started getting into movies to escape reality, I was renting out 4-6 DVDs a week. I remember I even kept a page in my maths book for movie reviews. Of course at the time, I was only interested in thriller/horror movies & conspiracy theory documentaries, whether they were "The Shining, Silence of the Lambs" masterpieces or "Troma classics" (Rabid Grannies & Redneck Zombies) they were more or less a defining aspect of my life. Watching Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits Dvd one moment then watching the absolute scum of the film universe the next all contribute to the man I am today. To think, some teenagers spent their time with sex, drugs, alcohol & extroverted experiences lololol....
