I can't believe the universe contains materials so beautiful/ugly and inhospitable to life. It's unfathomable and I hate hearing shit like "o I would love 2 go explore Saturn". Bullshit you little lie you don't Space walk you've never Space walked

Is there any reason to believe the gas giants don't have solid cores? I was just thinking about this and like how could they not? They probably all have huge solid planets under those enormous impenetrable atmospheres

The gas giants are often considered protostars, bodies with not quite the mass to start a fusion reaction. They are thought to have solid metallic hydrogen and helium cores. They are "metallic" because under the huge amount of pressure helium and hydrogen behave like conductors. This would explain the extremely powerful magnetic fields of the gas giants.

Depends on what it means to "see" them. I think it's pretty cool that we can infer what's going on under those clouds based on data gleaned from experiments here on earth.

knowing something is there is not the same as seeing it. I want. to see them.

show me the metallic cores

I bet they are totally smooth and uniform and perfectly spherical from the insane gravity. probably like king sized pinballs

I think that even under the intense pressure at the core of a gas giant, the hydrogen still wouldn't be solid. Solid hydrogen occurs only under very rare conditions; even the pressure at a gas giant's core would require a temperature near absolute zero to allow for solid hydrogen, I would think. The solids in the core of these planets are probably the heavier elements that make up a small percentage of the planet's core. The hydrogen would be metallic, but probably liquid.

The heart of Ouranous is an ice-bound orb on which is erected Moloth, a grim fortress made of the bones of Megalothons wherein the Blood Queen Erzebeth Bathorie drains the lifesap of lissome maidens, attended by her three eyed and quadruple horned yak.

True story.
