Default Hamilton

have we had a thread on Hamilton: An American Musical? i couldn't find one.

i'm not theater aficionado but damn this is something else. any fans here? would be fun to discuss it some

also curious what non-americans think of it. as an american you get this sense of pride and belonging because its about the beginning of your country; i'm curious if it resonates similarly or not when that element isn't the same

I know very little about it but have a friend who is obsessed with it. Gonna listen to the soundtrack now.

maybe read the top part of this wikipedia entry to get a quick overview of all the shit this guy did in his life, and then the album will jump to life more:

There was certainly no "hip-hops" in the 1700s

In all seriousness this just seemed cheesy as hell when they performed on the oscars or whatever, I should give it a fair shot though

on the one hand, it is a broadway musical, so some element of cheesy is inevitable. that said, it's not a typical musical and the songwriting and storytelling are just incredible. a song out of context is a tough way to form an opinion on the whole thing, worth giving it a fair shot in my opinion

Although I may have heard of Alexander Hamilton, where I did have to Google to get a first name, I'm not completely sure and might not have. A quick flick through his Wikipedia entry reveals that I knew nothing of his life and deeds.

News of the musical production had not reached me until this thread's creation.

that's ok, I would guess at least 50% of Americans couldn't tell you he is featured on the ten dollar bill, less than 25% could name one thing he did, and the most common answer to that second question would be "president of the united states"

Saw it off-Broadway last spring and then on Broadway in February. It's terrific - overhyped but can live up to it. Much of the integral original cast leaves in a month so I'm interested to see how the new cast does (plus all the touring casts).
