Man, Chris Rock's stand up sure hasn't stood the test of time; that's for sure. Probably why he's relegated to appearing in 3rd rate movies starring Adam Sandler

I know Im pretty synonymous with the castrating feminist on here but it was a phase that lasted about 1.5 years while I worked through some things and that manifested most intensely on this board, which is one of the few sorts of places anyone can discuss wild ideas without much consequence (I was only an irl weird feminist for like 3 months)
With that said I apologize for my reign of terror and to anyone I have insulted and demeaned or whose time I have perhaps wasted on any topic political or otherwise @vixnix I would say awkward insecure people are more vulnerable to social justice tendencies than anyone because they are looking for an excuse for why they aren't successful in the world socially or otherwise and also for a sense of accomplishment and virtue in a world where they feel underappreciated. Personally my interest in politics coincided with a lot of personal/family crises and physical/mental health issues, maybe as a form of projection or a desire for escape. I also think we live in an era where its impossible to avoid thinking about gender issues regardless of where you line up, we are still trying to understand what happens when you remove womens traditional role of thousands of years with an experiment less than a century old. But if you have healthy and meaningful relationships it becomes harder for ones worldview to become so skewed in any direction . Just my two cents Last edited by null123 : 10-28-2015 at 07:51 PM. That all sounds really plausible...it's a really lovely surprise to read a reply from you.
So...are you Catholic now? What do you think your explanation of this new period of your life will be, 5 years from now? :P |

Hahaha yeah like... I haven't become Catholic yet but I am still obsessed with theology and still intend on becoming one but I'm gonna stick to just going to mass or other church for a while still, maybe a year. I wanted to start RCIA but I wound up moving across the country a month ago so it kinda muddled that. Could go on about this but yeah I have learned my lesson (for the most part) when it comes to being a strident know-it-all scold about anything... At least while I'm in my 20s

You won't be taking communion though, huh... I started the RCIA...would have been 5 years ago now. I still consider converting, it's always on my mind. Kinda feels like I would be giving up all my exhausting independent thoughts about theology and just flopping into the comforting hierarchy of an ancient organisation. There are a few doctrinal sticking points like gay marriage, abortion, IVF, stuff like that. They kind of niggle away at me. But mostly it would be nice to just slough off that hubris I have, that I Need To Work It All Out Myself.
In Catholicism I feel my duty would be more practical. I need to pray 3 times a day. I need to make sure we get to mass every week. I need to be diligent and purposeful for the vast majority of my day, which means just going ahead and washing the dishes and hanging out the laundry instead of endless pondering whether I should, or whether it makes a difference, or whether God has an opinion on whether or not I should. Stuff like that. Did you move right across, to NY or something? |

The most obnoxious in your face social justice people I know are all actual activists, and at least online, they constantly are showered in praise omg u r so brave, so great u r dedicating ur life to others, blah blah it just makes me want to throw up. and they are all the most aggressive, angriest white people I know, like they were created as a natural reaction to the angry white racists of the world

if any of you saw the first episode of south park this season, I felt like I was watching something written specifically about all these nutjobs I went to college with, but I guess they exist everywhere

Not sure if this will derail the thread to go into the catholic thing but I hear you and personally dont think any one person can or should figure out christianity by themselves. It was never meant to be an extreme intellectual feat, although of all the things to study I find it the most interesting |

Me too. Nice to meet kindred spirit. And yeah, if you're intellectualising Christianity and not "bearing fruit" so to speak...well you know. Faith without works, etc.!!
